Finished the story...stream of conscious rant

I finished the first story. The main character surprised me because I started off trying to balance him with the other character, but he was there to let me know that the story was really about him and from his perspective. The ending was such a surprise to me... I honestly don't even know where it came from. I was re-reading the story to someone close to me, and I recognized some of what I had written as having come directly from my sub-conscious. The words are somehow related to where I am and who I am, and yet they are completely submerged within the context of the text I've written. The process was fascinating to watch, both while actually writing it and after second and third draft editing.
