Big Head Press bills this graphic novel as” This is not your daddy’s Odyssey”. The graphic novel has some bite and a bit of an edge. Here is the synopsis from the back cover and I think you can see why:” This is an
Odysseus who time and time again defies the gods with every fiber of his being
and an unyielding hunger for personal freedom. This is a hero the gods are
determined to break, to prove forever to men that even the greatest of them is
less than nothing to the smallest of gods: but Odysseus will not be broken,
even when his goal is snatched right out of his grasp, even when the men under
his command are butchered and crushed around him as punishment for fighting
alongside him, even when he is cast down to hell.

The battle of wills is so fierce that killing him would become an admission of failure. And the question becomes how much Odysseus can take before he shatters, like all men must, because the gods have something at
stake in this too. Odysseus is not only a new kind of man, the kind beyond the
reach of any god but his own will. And the winner of the battle determines the
future of the world.”

This was a very entertaining read, but before I go any further, I just want to add that there is a caution placed on this graphic novel, and it made me laugh. It reads “For Mature Readers- If you are not mature, put this
book back on the shelf and go read a story about super –powered mutants or
something.” The entire novel has this kind of edge. The Odysseus of this story
is one complex, driven hombre. He will not let the gods mess with him at all. I
enjoyed his moxie and zest for life. I think we could all take a page from his
determination when dealing with some of life’s obstacles. He doesn’t just get
over them, he crushes them.

I enjoyed the ride with Odysseus through time and read the novel rather quickly. The writing is compelling and it made want to know what he was going to get into next and how he was going to get himself out of it as
he gave the gods the extended middle finger. It was a great tongue in cheek, in
your face kind of graphic novel that was a very nice departure from the norm. I
would recommend this if you are trying to laugh a little and shake your head a bit;
this is cure to the same old same old. Check it out, click the Amazon button
and defy the gods.
