How much does an e-book cost?

The world has undoubtedly taken a huge leap from the time that the Internet was created. We could certainly speak of a before and after in terms of communication and technology. The network of networks is omnipresent in all activities of our daily life. It has gotten into our daily lives in a swift and fierce way

Before; we had to wait in line to buy tickets to a movie, take the trouble to go to a bank to pay the electricity or credit card. We had to get out and roam around different stores to find the gift we wanted to do to someone special. Neither talking about buying a plane ticket nor book a stay in a hotel; through technology those things belong to the past (fortunately) and we have become addicted to the Web to solve many aspects of our life. (Even to find a loving partner in some cases or the answer for any sickness)

In the world of literature it could not have been otherwise. Gradually printed texts are giving rise to electronic books. Now we can save paper, ink, infrastructure, avoid to carrying uncomfortable books to give rise to the texts embodied in a computer; tablet, or electronic reader. Also allows transporting with us an impressive amount of books (depending on the storage capacity of the device) that allows us a great comfort.

Of course the electronic books, e-book as they are known today are less expensive than their printed versions, since the investment as explained in the previous paragraph, is less than traditional texts.

That leads to the initial question. If there are no infrastructure costs, personnel, raw materials and so on: why the prices of electronic books in many cases are so high? Some authors, (I guess it's because of its prestige and notoriety) set the price of e-pub format, between $ 15.00 and $20.00, which I think is too expensive. There really is no coherent explanation for such high prices if what they want is that the books can reach a wide readership. That is one of the main reasons why there is piracy: illegal copying and distribution of texts, due to scandalous and abusive price that some publishers and authors set the price for their books. Attention: I'm not belittling the work of these people. What I say is that it seems too high asking price for their works.

I do not share on the other hand, that the books are sold for $ 0, 99. The idea of offering the book at that price, product of the efforts of an author has used to write the work, correct, and format it for submission to other potential readers, in my opinion is absurd. Obviously everyone is free to set the price that considers relevant to its work. For my part I think a fair price for an e-book should be between U.S. $ 2.00 to 5.00, I think that is reasonable and does not affect the reader's pocket.

Since some authors had the idea to set the price of the e-book to $ 0.99 and managed to sell a huge number of books, others imitate the same recipe in order to get more money. No matter the quality of writing, the only interest is selling.

I'm sorry this is so: I believe that literature is more than just commercialism. I enjoy a good book; I dive in its quality, in its story. I share its characters and accompanied the author in this world he has created for our enjoyment.

El mundo sin lugar a duda ha dado un salto enorme dese el momento que se creó Internet. Podríamos hablar sin lugar a dudas de un antes y un después en materia de comunicación y tecnología. La red de redes esta omnipresente en todas las actividades de nuestra vida diaria; se ha ido metiendo en nuestro quehacer cotidiano de un manera veloz y feroz.

Antes teníamos que hacer fila para poder comprar la entrada a un cine, tomarnos la molestia de ir a un banco a pagar la electricidad o una tarjeta crédito. Debíamos salir y dar vueltas por diferentes tiendas para buscar ese regalo que deseábamos hacer a alguien especial. Ni hablar de comprar un pasaje en avión o reservar la estadía en un hotel. A través de la tecnología, eso ya es cosa del pasado (felizmente) y nos hemos vuelto adictos a la Web para poder resolver muchos aspectos de nuestra vida, (hasta buscar pareja en muchos casos)

En el mundo de la literatura esto no podía haber sido de otra forma. Poco a poco los textos impresos van dando lugar a los libros electrónicos; ahora se puede ahorrar papel, tinta, infraestructura, cargar libros incómodos y demás para dar lugar a los textos plasmados en un ordenador, Tablet o lector electrónico que además nos permite llevar una cantidad impresionante (dependiendo de la capacidad de almacenamiento del aparato) que nos permite una gran comodidad.

Lógicamente los libros electrónicos; e-book como se les conoce en la actualidad son mucho más económicos que sus versiones impresas, ya que la inversión como explico en el párrafo anterior, es menor a los textos físicos tradicionales.

Eso lleva a la pregunta inicial. Si ya no hay gastos de infraestructura, personal, materia prima y demás ¿Por qué se ponen los precios de los libros electrónicos en muchos casos tan elevados? Hay autores, (supongo que es por su prestigio y notoriedad) que colocan los precios de los formatos e-pub, entre US$ 15.00 y 20.00, lo que en mi opinión es demasiado oneroso. Realmente no hay una explicación coherente para colocar estos precios tan altos si lo que se desea es que los libros lleguen a una gran cantidad de lectores. Esa es una de las razones principales porque existe la piratería, la copia y distribución ilegal de textos; debido al sobreprecio escandaloso y abusivo que algunas editoriales y autores colocan a sus trabajos. Ojo: no estoy menospreciando el trabajo de estas personas. Lo que digo es que me parece demasiado elevado el precio que piden por sus obras.

Es igual el caso de los libros que se colocan en US$. 0, 99. Yo no comparto el concepto de ofrecer un trabajo por ese precio ya que no representa el esfuerzo que el autor ha realizado para poder escribir una obra y presentarla ante los posibles lectores. Obviamente cada quien es libre de poner el precio que considere pertinente a su labor. Por mi parte me parece que un precio justo para un e-book debería de estar entre los US$ 2.00 a 5.00, creo que es razonable y no afecta al bolsillo de lector.

Desde que algún autor tuvo la idea de colocar el precio de los e- book a US$ y logró vender una enorme cantidad de libros, otros imitan esa misma receta con la finalidad de conseguir obtener más dinero. No importa la calidad de la escritura, lo que interesa es vender.

Lamento que esto sea así, creo que la literatura es algo más que solo mercantilismo. Yo disfruto de un buen libro, me sumerjo en su calidad, en su historia. Comparto sus personajes y acompaño al autor en ese mundo que ha creado para nuestro deleite.

En fin; cada quien a lo suyo. Esto es solo mi punto de vista…
