How to pick the right cover designer
No matter what a person tells you, everyone judges a book by its cover. I know, very clique but it is a truth and not an unfortunate truth as long as you get the right designer. However, how do you pick the right cover designer? Here are our tips –
1) Find a cover designer that designs cover for your topic. A simple Google search can find those nitch cover designers for you. However most cover designers are divided by Nonfiction and Fiction designers.
2) Look at their covers and see what they design the most of; every designer has a style. Do you like their style? Remember the cover designer knows more about selling books than you do (more often than not) but you still have to deal with the designs they give you.
3) Does the designer offer more than one design? For the most part, steer away from designers that only offer one design. You want two to three choices.
4) Don’t just go for the lowest price. Designers charge rates based on what others charge, the quality of the work, where they have to go to make the design, and any overhead they have. Some designers hand draw covers, use software to create designs or pull stock photos from companies. The most expensive is stock photos and will reflect in the price.
5) What is their timeframe for the design? Let’s face it some designers can crank out lots of designs quick while others need some time. However, no designer should ever say two days. A week should be the soonest and a month the longest. Shorter means that they are sending you stock designs which is where a company or a designer designs hundreds of covers and then slaps your title on one and sends it to you. While it may work sometimes, it is better that the designer has a personal touch with you and your work.
6) Make sure you follow any extra terms a cover designer has or you could get into legal problems. Stock Photo companies have very strict terms with their photos. Your cover design needs to alert you of these terms and how to comply with them. For Dream Books LLC credit to the owners of the photos is required inside the book with a link to a creative commons license number. Anyone who fails to do that is risking legal problems with the owner of the images used.
We hope this helps you decide what cover designer to use. Dream Books LLC has teamed up with The Book Cover Design.com to offer cover design services to authors. This service is very competitive and utilizes the newest technology to make your design perfect. Payment plans available and 30.00 discounts can be applied.
