In Story and Sketch: Love, Travel and Jungle Family in Tropical Asia

Why Borneo? Why write about a place that some are afraid to visit and that most people misunderstand because of its unique intricacies and idiosyncrasies. Tom McLaughlin has set out to change that by writing Borneo Tom - In Story and Sketch: Love, Travel and Jungle Family in Tropical Asia- – an unlikely book about an unlikely place that’s full of insight into one of the most fascinating places on Earth – Borneo.

Tom McLaughlin is an expat and freelance writer who has traveled throughout Southeast Asia using his pen to “raise hell” about certain subjects he’s passionate about, including orangutans, traveling, the benefits and foibles of retiring in another country and the Matang Wildlife Center in Malaysia’s Kubah National Park.

Tom’s new book, Borneo Tom- In Story and Sketch: Love, Travel and Jungle Family in Tropical Asia, explores various aspects of traveling and relocating in Southeast Asia without becoming a memoir of his exploits.

Through essays and humorous accounts, you’ll learn about such dubious subjects as:

* How “an old American gets an Islamic girl pregnant after vasectomy.”
* Disabled guy wanders into the jungle at night.
* The truth about Borneo Apes.
* After the Tsunami: Back to smoking weed.
* Father hauls daughter up river in Borneo.
* Couple snorkels through jellyfish and live!

Through all of the fun and satire in his book, you’ll learn about subjects that are important to Tom, such as the portrayal of people of the Islamic faith in the media and how the orangutan is being exploited. You’ll finish the book with a better understanding about how these bigotries and prejudices can be eradicated.

Borneo is a place where exceptional flora and fauna abound among some of nature’s most beautiful surroundings. A huge variety of endangered animal species live on the land around Borneo. Only recently has the public taken an interest in promoting awareness on the conservation of these disappearing species. The people of Borneo are as diverse as their surroundings – with almost 18 million people – some, native tribes that include the inland dwelling Dayaks (hunters and gatherers), a coastal population that includes farmers and fishers (predominantly Muslims) and a few nomadic tribes. The Penan is a group of nomadic inhabitants that live in the rainforests of Borneo and are known for their attempts to block roads and logging sites attempting to protect the destruction of
rainforests.

One area of Borneo that Tom writes about in Borneo Tom- In Story and Sketch: Love, Travel and Jungle Family in Tropical Asia, is the Matang Wildlife Center, located in the Kubah National Park in Malaysia. This wildlife refuge is near and dear to Tom’s heart and he brings this habitat to life for those of us who haven’t been as fortunate to observe it in person.

You’ll be able to visualize the vast enclosures where animals live safely, without danger from poachers or other predators. Rock pools, swimming areas and nature trails enable visitors and researchers from
local and overseas universities to observe and study while relaxing in one of the world’s most beautiful spots.

Borneo Tom - In Story and Sketch: Love, Travel and Jungle Family in Tropical Asia, by Tom McLaughlin, is a humorous, yet educational account of a man’s unique experience in an exceptional area of the world and will leave you eager to know more about the place – and the man.
