Land of King Cotton ...

Late August in the Mississippi Delta is cruel. I know this is true because I lived there two summers — on the grounds of Parchman Penitentiary, just a few short miles from the site when Emmett Till was murdered.

Mid-nineties is common and typically it is so hot and humid that if you’ve been sitting a while and stand up, your backside sticks to your clothes, even if they're made of cotton. Horseflies buzz you with voracity and there’s rarely any shade, even under the most voluminous pecan (puh-con') trees.

One time my husband and I thought it would be refreshing to walk down to the sand bars of the Mississippi River for some relief on a hot Saturday morning. “Don’t go down there after 9:30 in the mornin' or it'll be too hot to walk back,” a Mississippi friend warned.

Silly Yankees. We waited until 10:30 to head out for the river channel and it came to me an hour later I was not going to make it back to the river’s edge and my husband had to convince me it would be the best thing to just keep walking and that he would NOT call 911.
