Early on in my amateur baseball career I struggled from time to time when
it came to hitting the ball. I was just above an average hitter, but
every now and then, I would struggle to keep my focus – on the
ball. As a result of quickly glancing over at a base runner, or a
fielder, or taking my mind's [eye] off seeing the target rotating all
the way to the head of my bat; I went down swinging and frustrated
with myself for not making solid contact with the ball. I was
further disappointed by not being able to be on base in order to
steal more bases, and/or help drive in more runs. Rather than simply
shrugging off my disappointment, and refocusing my attention on the
goal of making solid contact with the ball on subsequent 'at bats', a
bad game would ensue the more I focused on my shortcomings and
