Q&A with Kathryne Kennedy author of The Fire Lord's Lover

-When you come up with such a unique world as the one you created in this novel, what do you draw from to get this right? Where do the names come from?

I draw completely from my imagination, working out all the world logistics as I'm building it. Because the novel is also set in historical times, the research I do for the era also adds to the fantasy element that I develop. Most of the names are also a result of my research for the era, although all of the fantasy names I make up on the spot. There are a few names that I really play with, but mostly they pop in my head when I visualize the character (whether that characters is an elf or a dragon. :}).

-What is the most important element in your novels-action, suspense, romance and how is it you go about melding them together?

For me, they are all equally important. Maybe that's why I find it natural to meld them all together.

-I really enjoyed the way you paced The Fire Lord's Lover, what was the key to that process?

As you know, writing a novel takes longer than reading it, so for me, my pacing revolves around the writing. I make sure I'm not getting bored while writing it. :}

-Your cover is very busy, how much input into the design do you have?

That varies from publisher to publisher, as does the cover art and taglines that might be on it. I trust my publisher to know what will catch a reader's eye, make them want to pick up the book and give it a glance. Once they open the book and start reading, then that's my job.

-What is next for you?

This month, the paperback re-release of my first novel, BENEATH THE THIRTEEN MOONS, hits the bookstores. I'm working on book three of THE ELVEN LORDS series, LOVING THE LORD OF ILLUSION. Book two, THE LADY OF THE STORM, releases in August of 2011, (which follows THE FIRE LORD'S LOVER).

-It appears to me that you have written a few novels in your day. What advice do you have for someone that is new to the genre like me? What can I expect?

I wish I could tell you. The truth is, it varies from author to author. Your journey to publishing will be just as unique as you, and your writing.

-What is it like to put in so much hard work, heart and soul, and have someone like me, a blogger and a guy no less, to read your work and make comments about it?

Well, I didn't know you were a guy until you just mentioned it. :} My beta reader, who gives me feedback before I send the manuscript on to my editor, is also a guy...and a horror writer. So I'm used to having a man read my work (and I do hope I have other male readers out there). Since you are working toward publication, I will warn you: there is no such thing as a perfect book. Write the adventure that you want to live. Some readers will love a particular scene or character, and others won't. That's okay. If you can please most of the people most of the time, you're doing great, and on your way to becoming a successful author.
