Stranger in Danger! Would You Step In to Help?

You are taking a leisurely walk through your neighborhood park and you witness a man who is engaged in a heated fight with his girlfriend and roughly pushes her to the ground. Do you step in and tell him to back off? While watching your young daughter laugh with glee as she flies down the slide by herself for the very first time, you overhear another mother screaming at her son and shaking him violently. Do you get involved to protect the child? At what point do we feel compelled to get involved on behalf of complete strangers who may be in danger?
The television program Primetime Live has done a series of specials entitled “What Would You Do?” and one of the scenarios they presented using hidden cameras was similar to the first one I described above. Of the ninety-two men who were taped over a two-day period, only five of them did anything to help. There were 100 women taped as witnesses to this same scene, and fourteen of them intervened in some way. So, women chose to put themselves in the middle of this dangerous situation more than twice as often as men. Isn’t that interesting? Still, I am discouraged that more people did not do anything to help a woman who was trapped in a scary and violent situation.
The lead character of my new novel Compulsion is definitely a woman who chooses to get involved. Emily Stone has made in her life’s work to track and gather evidence against some of the worst kinds of criminals. She is on a mission to rid neighborhoods of pedophiles, rapists, and murderers and does so without the help of an official police badge. But, when Emily becomes the hunted, who will choose to get involved and help her?
You can purchase a copy of Compulsion here. After you read the book, I would love to hear from you! Are you ready to step into a situation and be another Emily Stone? I have created a poll on the right side of my blog regarding the issue "what would you do if you saw a crime happening", Please take a look and enter a response.
Thank you and I will let you know the results.
