The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

After getting feedback in my Gotham Short Story class on a story I've been working on, I edited the piece and have now sent it off to two literary mags for their consideration.

It seems like there are more literary mags that now charge for reading submissions, but I'm sticking to those that don't. Mags like the North American Review and the Gettysburg Review have been around a long time, and have published well established authors as well as writers new to the small press scene. There are several titles that are the "high end" of the market, so for the time being I'm not submitting to places like The Paris Review, Zoetrope, Tin House, etc.

I do like that some of these mags now allow for electronic submission. You just go onto their website, upload your short story file and wait for them to respond. No muss - no fuss. It seems like a much better way to deal with submissions because there's no question the file was rec'd, it's a green option - no printing multiple copies - and it doesn't require postage, SASEs and multiple trips to the Post Office.

Given that many of these mags take months to review their submissions, I'm just going to go back to writing more short stories, and if one of them hits, great... otherwise there will be other stories to submit and other mags to submit them to.

Have you ever submitted a story to one of these literary magazines? If so, what was your experience?
