I recall, I was about five or six years old when I told my parents I
belonged to God and not to them. I'm sure you can imagine the look
on their faces as they comprehended what I said. I believe it was
my mother who said, “Boy, I brought you in this world, and I'll
take you out!” She said it because I had done or said something
inappropriate, obviously. Being the homemaker she was, it was her
who dished out physical punishment for 'bad' behavior. I won't deny
I was a handful for the first ten to twelve years of my life. Let's
put it this way; I was curiously destructive, yet I possessed a
creative imagination. What my family viewed as destructive,
ultimately turned out to be a burning desire within me to create new
