Writing had always been an outlet for me--it's a release and a chance to allow inner emotions take hold.

That release becomes a challenge for me to express my inner feelings by writing either fiction or non-fiction, depending on the moment.

I write fiction to embellish a main character for better or worse.  For instance, in 'The Captain's Coin,' young Michael Brady is symptomatic of the many impoverished, grief-stricken masses leaving Ireland at the height of the Potato Famine. His struggles become a metaphor for others over the years coming into NYC harbor from all over the world. His experience and success in the New World represents the hope, fear and ultimate journey that started as a young man without family or resources setting foot on American soil.

I share my experiences as a writer, teacher and tour-guide in my writings. My bios of boxing greats, such as the late Ken Norton in 'Believe--Journey from Jacksonville,' and Rayco Saunders' 'Blessed or Cursed are stories of triumphs over adversity. Their story is one of perseverance against the odds. Events unfold in their lives, ultimately accomplishing victory.

I try to convey a message to the reader that overcoming the challenges of life can be achieved and one can impact and touch the lives of others.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everybody,

John V Amodeo, author of “The Captain’s Coin”
