“The act or art of forming letters and characters on paper, wood, stone, or other material, for the purpose of recording the ideas which characters and words express, or of communicating them to others by visible signs.”

The most important part of writing is figuring out what to write and to plan ahead enough to make that idea come to life. Here are some strategies that will get you started on your next novel.

1) Pick a purpose – Every book has a purpose. Make sure that your purpose is at the top of your mind the entire time you are writing.

2) Focus – Make sure you stay focused. Detach yourself from any unhelpful distractions. However if you are writing a book about a family, being around your own family may help you write a better novel.

3) Never stop writing. Keep your brain going – Try these

a. Journal Writing – You will be surprised how many stories you can come up with by writing in a journal. If you don’t like journals write in a journal like it was a story. You never know what today’s entry will turn into.

b. Free write – Do you have an idea. WRITE IT DOWN. A paragraph, sentence, page, it may become a novel but never let it die. Write it down and file it. One day you may be at a writer’s block and you will go to the file and say, hey that’s perfect. Writers block gone!

c. Cluster – You all know a bubble chart right or a spider web chart. You will be surprised how effective those can be in planning your novel. This will make writing and editing easier. It will also make your publisher happy since your are focused and on target he entire time!

d. Listing – Begin with a thought and then start listing words that are related to it and then related to the words that you wrote down. This will increase your vocabulary and will ultimately help you write a more engaging story.
