Is the story of Noah’s Flood simply a rewritten version of a story found in the Epic of Gilgamesh? Some people actually believe that the biblical story of Noah’s Flood was not historical at all, and was borrowed from flood legends in Mesopotamia, especially the Epic of Gilgamesh.
Dating from the Third Dynasty of Ur (circa 2100 BC), the Epic of Gilgamesh is often regarded as the first great work of literature. It is contained on 12 large tablets. Perhaps the most interesting story in the Epic of Gilgamesh is found in the 11th tablet. In that tablet, the gods decided to flood the whole earth to destroy man because of his sins. But Ea, the god who made man, warned Utnapishtim and told him to build an enormous boat to save himself and his family. Sounds familiar?
