Five of the big six New York publishers are foreign owned?

(1) Random House, Inc., a division of Bertelsmann AG a German Corporation, is the world's largest English-language general trade book publisher.

(2) The Penguin Group, also referred to as Penguin Putnam, is owned by Pearson of the United Kingdom, is the second largest publisher in the United States and Canada and the largest in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and India.

(3) Simon & Schuster, Inc., is the publishing arm of Viacom the lone major American trade publisher.

(4) Harper Collins, a subsidiary of the News Corporation Limited is an Australian company and has annual revenues of over $1 billion.

(5) Hachette Book Group USA formerly the Time Warner Book Group Inc. is French corporation.

(6) Holtzbrinck Publishing Holdings, headquarters in Germany.

All the more reason to promote and support independent authors and publishers-there is too much mind control in the jands of the few!

You're absolutely right about this. Another publisher is Harlequin Romances in New York City, which is owned by a Canadian it is the world largest romance publisher selling over 131 million books in 2006. Harlequin head office is located in Toronto, Canada and has 15 branches around the world.

It is also my understanding that these 6 companies control something like 90% of the market-at least what is put in bookstores-is that right?

While News Corp might be an Australian company, Rupert Murdoch is now a U.S. citizen and most of the company is headquartered here in the U.S. But you are right: The larger companies are all foreign owned except for S&S. Also John Wiley, McGraw-Hill, and Nelson, the next biggest (or close) are all U.S. owned, so far.
