51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
Podcast your book, one section at a time.
Write about trends in your genre.
Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

Comment by Patrick Brigham on July 10, 2013 at 12:16pm: I am afraid that our man Mick Rooney is right about the amount of effort writers these days have to make to be noticed - 90% publicity and 10% writing - a depressing thought when we have all tried so hard to write the perfect book. I can hardly claim to be a successful writer, but things are slowly changing. I think some people like my books, but maybe it is because I reserve an hour a day to promote my books. Consistency may not just be 'the hob-goblin of the small mind,' but also a writers ultimate salvation

Comment by Kevin Hardman on June 29, 2013 at 4:26pm: Honestly, if I knew I'd tell you. (I'd also apply it to my other book - Warden (Book 1: Wendigo Fever) - which is ranking respectably but not doing nearly as well.)

I have ad campaigns on Goodreads for both books, but I don't think they're particularly effective. I don't have a Facebook page for my work, my blog doesn't get a lot of hits and I don't have a lot of Twitter followers. About all I've done is post on Goodreads and tweet about it, but that's it - nothing much beyond that. (Oh wait - I did get a good review on Comic Book Bin, but I don't know how much to credit the site since other people have gotten good reviews there but not achieved the same sales volume. I'm certain it gave me a boost, but I don't know how to quantify it.)

Outside of praying about it (which I still do every day), I'm not sure I can point to one specific factor and say that's what did it. On a side note, everyone has raved about the cover art, so I'm certain that's helped me. In fact, my own advice is that is getting great cover art and a good description are the initial one-two punch you need to start getting sales.
