51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

When Amanda Jennings, a wheelchair-bound college student, moves into an old house to search for clues about the eccentric Dr. James Harcort, she finds journals left behind by the mysterious doctor.

As the journals are translated, Amanda discovers several magical spells and rituals, and decides to try out the one called the Silverdream Ritual. Unbeknownst to her, at the same time, in another world, Prince Kelvan of Serras begins the Bloodfire Ritual.

To their surprise and terror, they crisscross through time and space, finding themselves in each others’ worlds. In Amanda’s case, she not only finds that she can walk, but that the inhabitants of Elydir believe she is The Coritus, the person who will save them from the evil Emperor Aton. In her old world, Prince Kelvan finds himself unable to walk, and a captive of a man with delusions of grandeur named Professor Michael Stevenson.

Amanda, now known as Amen-Jen, is tasked with the epic quest of ridding Elydir of Aton and his half elf, half human witch named Hagah. Assisting her is Prince Kelvan’s pet red dragon, Eliazon.

Amanda’s success or failure is a two-edged sword. If she fails, she will die, leaving Kelvan crippled and trapped in an alien land. If she succeeds and is able to return to her own world, she will go back to living her hum-drum life in a wheelchair.

all 8 of my novels are on sale FREE this week only, by Smashwords (they charge their own tiny prossessing fee but otherwise books are FREE).  My books include two spoofs on vampire/James Bond stories; a tale of supernaturals in the Revolution of 1848, and 5 other novels not involving fantasy but otherwise recommended (by me and some other folks).  Check out descriptions under my name, especially "Bad Vampires," "Nazi Werewoofs" (woof, woof); and "Mask of Freya."  Karl Larew

Not fast enough.

“It’s not happening fast enough! It’s not happening fast enough!” Those were the complaints of Jim Morrison during the early days of the 1960’s rock band The Doors concerts. They had been together as a group for a mere seven months and Jim was getting antsy for them to get discovered. “Relax Jim,” Ray Manzareck (The keyboardist and discoverer of Jim’s song writing ability) replied. “All great things take time.”

Within the year the group was world famous and Jim Morrison became one of the biggest rock stars ever. My point being, Kindle and epublishing are a new medium. It’s going to take time before ereaders become as common in people’s homes as cell phones. Right now, we as writers are experiencing this new revolution in its infancy. Can you imagine the global market our books will be exposed to in the next five years? It’s a bit mind-boggling. I’ve made sure to get my foot into this newly opening door from the beginning, and will continue to write books with world-wide appeal. With the epublication of DEGENERATES coming in a few days, I’ve begun what I call my psycho-killer global assault. Though I’ve sold and/or given away thousands of copies of my middle grade sci-fi fantasy books in the last few months, it appears that my more-adult themed books are getting the most unsolicited sales. By unsolicited, I mean I didn’t promote them that week and still had sales. So, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m somewhat switching genres for a few months while I re-published my adult noir thrillers with Kindle and Smashwords. I’ll be putting my cover designer and formatter to work, that’s for sure. Right now, I’m trying to come up with a new pitch for DEGENERATES. The old one is a bit boring. Watch for it soon. Oh, and my two day giveaway of DREAM TRAVELER yielded 139 sales in the U.S. and only 37 sales in the U.K. Kinda disappointing. Let’s see if I get residual sales. My blog ALWAYS WRITING has surpassed 100,000 hits. Thanks to all who read my posts.
