51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

How important is the ebook cover when attracting an audience?

I recently published my first ebook, a paranormal called AFTER. When deciding on a cover artist I was a little overwhelmed at the amount of people claiming to be one. I was quoted anywhere from $20 upwards of $100 or more. Going with the premise that you get what you pay for I chose the much higher end of the group. In return, I got a fabulous cover design and a true professional. My question, is what are people's experience with less expensive artists and their work? I did pay the $100 dollars but believe it was worth it since the cover is a huge factor in attracting attention to a book; even an ebook. What are everyone's thoughts? You can view the cover here:

I’ve spent my life surrounded by drug addicts and degenerates

Unfortunately, who you surround yourself with and the environment you exist in greatly influences your writing. Sometimes I wonder what my books would have been like if I'd have grown up in a nice quiet neighborhood where there was no crime, or maybe in a quaint country town where everyone knew each other. Then my books might have been more user-friendly. But no... my formative years were spent with the worst kinds of people. People who lied, and stole, and abused illegal drugs. Prostitutes and criminals. These are the people who made their impressions on me. These are the people and stories I write about. The dark side of human nature and society. Yeah, sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to grow up normally.
