51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

Although sales of my first book "And TheBeat Goes On" aren't sky-rocketing (I wish!) there has been a steady increase in sales. What lengths would you go to to market your new book? I'll tell you what I did recently. (Last week, in fact.) I went online to a site that listed every library in Canada. That's right - EVERY LIBRARY! I then proceeded to email each and every one individually to suggest a book aquisition - mine. Of course, the five hundred or so listings were deceivingly moderate considering that a lot of the time the listing for a regional library would then have anywhere from 10 to 50 smaller libraries within it's jurisdiction. I figure I contacted anywhere from 700 to 1000 libraries over the course of five nights. Of course, many libraries will not accept suggestions if you are not a patron with a bonafide library card, while others make it virtually impossible to reach them via email. (Cutting down on spam, I suppose, of annoying wanna-be authors like myself trying to sell their book!) I have recieved a few positive responses, but only time will tell. Now I have my sights set on that even more lucrative sea of potential patrons, the US library system. I must be nuts! On the other hand, I've been thinking that I really want to do whatever it takes to make a go of this thing called being a writer. So ... look out America cause here I come!

What is the best way to find an agent for someone like me? I have one children's book published from a super-small independent press (www.ThreeConditionsPrress.org). I had no agent this first time, and hope that with an agent my second book, which is done now, will be published by a bigger press. Anyone have any thoughts?

My manuscript Erotic Knights is with Lori Perkins Agency. Wish me luck.

EROTIC KNIGHTS is an erotic suspense comparable to Anthony Spinelli’s classic film Sex World and Belle De Jour’s (Dr. Brooke Magnanti) The Diary of a London Call Girl.
Rielly Wainwright, the protagonist and proprietress of EROTIC KNIGHTS, a fantasy sex spa for women, is a wrongfully convicted ex con living under a false identity on money stolen from a Mexicali drug dealer. When an investigative reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle receives a tip about a highly profitable sex-for-hire business in the fashionable enclave of Tiburon, California, he immediately begins to scrutinize the three-storied Victorian fortress hidden behind a six-foot rock wall. Intent on outing the elusive owner to the world, what he finds instead is the possibility of love. But as their romance progresses, a killer from the past reenters her life.
