Mr. McDonald

I appreciate the feedback. At least I know I am tracking in the right direction. - regards, Jim

Jim Ward -

I happen to think you're way ahead of the curve, doing exactly what you're doing - getting a running jump into what we all know is a huge pool. Tons of other folks' books floating around in there.

I did not start quite as early as you did ahead of publication, but I was able to establish a semblance of a presence on the 'net, by writing articles & notes on about three dozen excellent forums. I also started two separate websites - one for the book, and another for the specific subject matter. I'm not getting zillion hits daily, as I'd like. But they are increasing weekly, and hopefully that will continue.

Best of luck with Wealth Virtues. I plan on buying a couple of copies for family members for Christmas!

Thanks for sharing your ideas. That's what makes John Kremer's website so, so invaluable to us all.

After my book came out (5 weeks ago) I was then able to get in touch with everyone who had left their email addresses, and it looks like many of them are buying the book. I never would have had these sales had I not started early.

Will "preloading" on the socila networks pay off?

Unless you are Sarah Palin and make it to the top of the New York Times Bestleller List before your book hits the streets, you have to look at ways to become established at some level to at least gain a leg up on promoting your book.

If you are lucky enough to have a literary agent or traditional publisher working on your behalf to ensure you get noticed, then your talents as a writer have already been proven to someone in the traditional book publishing community, and the impedus is on them to take care of promotion. But what if you are like me and working on your first book?

As my book, 'Wealth Virtues' is not due out until early 2010, I started in the Spring of 2009 of establishing myself more prominantly within the social networking community, specifically under the title of the book. For example, my twitter address is http://twitter.com/WealthVirtues. I have started a discussion group on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=45900532926, and began a Ning discussion group (similar to this one) at http://wealthvirtues.ning.com. I do not expect much traffic on the latter two, but I have been building a followership on the Twitter account. And finally, have just designed and launched a website with blog at http://wealthvirtues.com.

The big question is, will all of these systems actually help? Yes I plan to do some "live" marketing after the book is published, but I am cureious to know if the veteran authors here have had successes doing the same things. In essence, has a lot of your pre-marketing paid off?

I will actually be able to measure this myself after book publication and availability. I believe the content is good, useful, readable, and understandable - but will it be acceptable for a mass market? These, I am sure, are questions every author (especially new authors) ask.

I will report back on my findings and hopefully pass on some success stories. Any hints or suggestions you may have on the sites listed above would be appreciated.

Oh my gosh! How right you are Patrick. You never know anymore what will happen from day to day. It's getting scary.

30 years in the trenches of emergency medicine has afforded me a front-row seat at the great Medical Miscreant Road Show. From my early years in medical school at UCSD La Jolla, where one of our respected guest lecturers was found guilty of murdering his wife and 2 daughters - until the Michael Jackson doctor shenanigans; the ER doc in LA who ran down 2 bicyclists, and now the tragic shooter at Fort Hood, Texas - I've kept pretty busy tracking more than 100,000 instances of flat-out strange physician misbehavior.

So I thought other folks might find the phenomenon as curious as I do.

Be safe out there. It's worse than you think.

Hi all,

Just published my second novel and its available on Amazon at this link:
http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B002SOKFS8

And here is my website for a longer excerpt:
http://www.faeriemoundbooks.com/

The Medallion is the first book in a series about two sisters in the middle ages.
Here is the synopsis:
This medieval fantasy follows the lives of Alana and Anwen, two sisters from a peasant family who enjoy their peaceful lives until raiders attack. The hamlet burned to the ground, their parents murdered, the girls are left to survive alone. The only object Anwen could rescue is a mysterious medallion which once belonged to a wizard.

Raiders capture, rape and enslave Alana, ultimately selling her to another criminal. Sick and broken she finally escapes and ends up at an inn where she begins to see a glimmer of hope for a better future.

Anwen struggles to her grandmother’s village where she is trained in the healing arts. She is tormented by visions of her sister in the hands of the raiders. She begins to suspect the medallion has powers that will help her find Alana. Anwen eventually goes on a quest to discover what the symbols mean.

The Medallion’s characters face their challenges with determination and courage. Will Anwen discover the secret behind the Medallion? Will Alana find a better life? Will the sisters be reunited?

This gripping and extensively researched historical fantasy of human courage in the middle ages focuses on a fascinating time in history due to upheaval that can change things in an instant. Adult fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s work will enjoy this story about strength and ingenuity of women from ancient times.

Since childhood the author has been a fan of fairy tales and magical stories. Anwen and Alana have long moved the author’s spirit to tell their story.

Thanks for reading,
Sunni
