Something About Me and My Book:: Author and resident of Lake Forest, CA, Khaled Siddiq originally published his memoirs in Farsi about his life growing up in Afghanistan. More recently, he has published them in English, titled, From my memories: Memoirs of political imprisonment from childhood in Afghanistan.

His story is no ordinary tale – he chronicles his political imprisonment beginning in 1932 at age 6, lasting for 15 years without a trial, verdict or definite sentence. After release from prison, he and his family were put under house arrest for another 5 years. This is Siddiq’s true story of the trials and tribulations he and his family endured after King Amanullah was overthrown, from coping with the merciless executions of his uncles and cousins to the severe mistreatment they experienced during and after imprisonment. His recollections shed light on some of the darkest chapters of Afghanistan's history and provide insight regarding the social ills and political injustices that brought the country to its current state of chaos and anarchy.

While Siddiq’s story is painful and tragic, it is also inspirational. Though prohibited from any education, Siddiq managed to teach himself how to read and write in 5 languages. He also overcomes years of oppression with humble patience, never demonstrating hatred or disrespect towards his oppressors.

These memoirs are unique in that they are the only ones that currently exist in English describing the suffering that occurred in Afghanistan prior to the Communist regime. While Siddiq’s motivation for writing this book was simply to put the truth of his family’s history out there, anyone would benefit from reading this moving historical account.
