I was born and raised in a typical upper middle-class sheltered suburb outside of "Sacatomato". I strived as a kid to expose myself to more diversity (ethnically and class-wise) with mixed success.
Studied psychology and poli. sci. at UC Davis and moved to San Diego in 1984 where I was a Probation Officer and later a Library Supervisor at the Univ. of Calif., San Diego.
I arrived at a tourist in New Orleans on Fri. 8/26/05 when the Saints where playing an exhibition game in the Superdome. Two days later I tried to leave town immediately after the evacuation order was given, but the Airport, Amtrak, and Greyhound had all shut down (2 days prior to the storm!) I ended up in the home of the Saints.
My memoir, "Diary From the Dome, Reflections on Fear and Privilege During Katrina" is a surreal journey of my experience inside that hell hole. Still, there were many great people there and most of all I learned of the power of fear to control our souls and behavior.
