I have a friend who, after two decades of writing several novels, is ready to throw in the towel.
This person has published a non-fiction book in the distant past. You would think she would have some inkling of the changes in the publishing industry since then.
The reason she's failing is that she has bought into the mantra: "I need an agent. I need a major publishing house." Because the blinders are on, she has failed to notice that the publishing world is in the same…

The Asphodel Cycle concludes with the release of the final book,
Apostle of Asphodel by Aspen Mountain Press. My epic fantasy series has been extraordinarily successful--far beyond what I thought it would be! Last year was really good to the series, with
The Gift of Redemption garnering a Top Ten Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novel of the year award from Preditors & Editors and
Temptation of Asphodel honored with a Top Ten Novel of 2008 nod from Preditors & Editors as well…

Call to authors from Florida. I've just posted the latest issue of
Florida Book News.
I'm always looking for writers' organizations in Florida that would like to get the word out about what they are doing and what they have to offer.
Also, I enjoy posting information about individual books by Florida authors, and Florida Book News is a great place to post information about book signings, conferences, workshops,…

I finished Ms. Lahiri's collection of short stories (Interpreter of Maladies) during the long July 4th holiday weekend and all I can say is Wow. Lahiri's writing is full of really sensual details along with a set of characters that feel very real, very three dimensional, particularly in their emotional lives and connections with one another. The very first story in the book, A Temporary Problem, is so surprising and quite intense while dealing with its charged emotional material very…

1780 South Carolina
Stone lions the size of wolfhounds sat on either side of the imposing front door as if to devour unwanted guests. Perhaps Jeremiah enjoyed their significance. He seldom entertained and seemed happier seated astride a horse than in the company of most ladies and gentlemen. He turned the marble knob and led Meriwether out onto the crescent-shaped balcony. He leaned momentarily on the iron railing. “Feel that…

Whether you’re building an author platform or marketing your book(s), the main goal in creating a blog is to attract an audience and drive potential customers back to your site where your book is sold.
Producing an article with great content is a must. It’s very competitive out there for new lurkers to just stumble upon your blog. But there are some techniques that can put you into the drivers seat so you can…

I know it is important to include a sample chapter from your book. After all who wants to buy a novel from an unknown author without even at least being able to look inside to see if you like the writing. I haven't figured out how to add sample chapters to my Amazon listing of Ainsworth, http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=anthea+carson+ainsworth&x=16&y=19
but at least I have added a sample chapter to my webste at…

I am writing the end of my second novel, and it marks the end of an era for me. I have been working on my duology for the last seven years and I am both sad and ecstatic to see it end.
I have had these characters living in my brain for so long, I almost feel like I’m cheating on them to be planning my next novel. And to be planning a novel other than Sacrifice or Survival is completely daunting. It’s funny how the safety of familiarity keeps us from expanding our horizons.
The…

Once again, we’re back with another episode of Bad Book Marketing. This one is about the writers state of mind. Too many writers make the following mistakes and I believe it’s mental:
1)Thinking that marketing is the publishers job.
2) Thinking that it is smart to market after your book has been written.
3) Thinking that marketing and selling are the same thing.
4) Thinking that people are interested in your book.
5) Thinking they come…

Sign of Success?
So, why aren’t you a huge success?
What’s taking so damn long for your “ship” to come in? You’re certainly gifted, hardworking, devoted, smart, and all that. You’re much smarter, and better at what you do than most of the lucky SOBs with a sh _ _pot full of money for displaying half-as _ _ed talent. So, what’s the deal? “Whassup?” Well, perhaps the question does not apply to you. I pose it to stir…
