A Conversation with Florence Byham Weinberg, Author of ‘Anselm, a Metamorphosis’

Born in the high desert country, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, Florence loved exploring the wilderness on foot and horseback. Those grandiose landscapes formed her sensibility. Hidden pockets of unexpected greenery tucked away near springs in folds of barren mountainsides spoke to her of gentleness and beauty in an otherwise harsh world. She published her first poem in a children’s…

Can We Come In and Laugh, Too? – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat; Think With Your Taste Buds, A Book and A Dish

Guest Post: Richard Hebert

Okay, here is a fun guy, witty and sharp. I had the pleasure of meeting Richard at the annual Florida Writer's Association banquet. We shared a few laughs and talked shop (writers do that, ya know). So, I tell Richard that I write fiction, mostly fantasy. He tells me he writes metafiction.
What? What is that?

In the St. Nick of Time – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds

“Two sidewalk Santas died on the street recently from heart failure, according to the death certificates.  Both were St. Nicholas Society to End Hunger volunteers who annually played Santa at outdoor locations around the city.  They collected money during the organization’s Christmas fund drive.”  He consulted a paper he had placed on the lectern. …

Another independent, local bookstore has the book!

I managed to cross state lines and get another book into an indie bookstore! If you're in Mississippi go and check out Bay Books on Main street. The owner is very accomodating and she has two very cool cats that take up residence inside. Most importantly, you can get a copy of I Wandered from New Orleans right off the shelf! In real live bookstores in New Orleans, Mississippi and Atlanta! It's too bad that poetry is mostly disregarded by people as being too complicated and vague.…

My books are on New Orleans bookstore shelves!! My take on Parasol's

Had a great day today! I first sent off three books that are on their way to Charis Books and More in Little Five Points, Atlanta. Then we drove down to New Orleans to hit some of the indie bookstores to see if I could get I Wandered from New Orleans onto some real bookstore shelves. It was a great success! Some books were bought outright, some were placed on consignment. Brilliant day! So, for my NOLA peeps and pops who want to check it out firsthand and pick up a…

Bald is Beautiful

I received a message yesterday from my friend, Jo, in Texas. She is scheduled to have her head shaved next week. She has volunteered to do this in an effort to raise money for St. Baldrick's childhood cancer research. She has less than a week to go to reach her goal of $2000. So far, she has about $1100. I think it's an incredible thing she is doing.

I'm sharing this because I'm so impressed when people give this much of themselves. Although I'm not quite ready to have my head… Continue

How to Get a 6-Figure Book Advance

It's almost unheard of these days in publishing for an author to get a high five-figure book advance, let alone six figures.

It's difficult even to get any literary agent to take on your book, let alone one of the top literary agents in the country.

Yet one author managed to do both.

On Thursday, I'm going to grill this author, Noah St. John, on how he did this.

And YOU also get a chance to… Continue
