Book Review: Getting Out of Dodge City, by Dr. Clifton E. Marsh, P.h.D.

Getting Out of Dodge City, Heading for L.A. on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe is a short novel that reads like a memoir and that will appeal to those interested in black American history and the dynamics of poor black American families from the early 1800s to the 1960s.…

Nine Keys to a Superior Family Summer Car Trip

Traveling by hybrid along the north shore of Lake Superior in winter enraptured my octogenarian husband and me.  How many more thrills and memories would a young family on a summer vacation get?  Here are the nine keys:

1. Travel the 700 miles from east to west. The two-lane velvety ribbon winds between spectacular vistas, second only to the Pacific Coastal Highway. Don’t turn your back on the mountains!

2. Be in Sault (meaning Falls) Ste. Marie, MI for the annual…

Not really.

At least, not yet.

With mega-book chains closing their doors (Borders) and online booksellers battling for eBook domination, authors are faced with the daunting task of connecting with their readers. How do we get our print books out there? How do we connect with our digital readers?…

Opposites Attract?

We've all heard the expression "Opposites Attract", and I guess it must be true. Take my wife and me. We could not possibly be more polar opposites in so many areas. In fact, the areas of similarity are virtually miniscule, and yet we just celebrated our twelfth anniversary!

I am a man who likes order; she is perfectly comfortable with a desk that looks like a dumpster was overturned on it. I prefer to read the Sports section first on Sunday, while she goes straight for the comics.…

Diagnosing Malignant Divorce.

The chief hallmarks of a malignant divorce are: one, the speed at which it occurs, and two, its ferocity.

It is astounding how quickly relative amity turns into outright enmity when divorce is in the air. One minute you are functioning as an ordinary couple; the next you are at one another's throats. All resentments and past accounts are called in, with no holding back. Even the one diaper change you failed to make seventeen years ago is not forgotten.

The shift from knowing the…

In the St. Nick of Time – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds

“Two sidewalk Santas died on the street recently from heart failure, according to the death certificates.  Both were St. Nicholas Society to End Hunger volunteers who annually played Santa at outdoor locations around the city.  They collected money during the organization’s Christmas fund drive.”  He consulted a paper he had placed on the lectern. …

We're Not Blended - We're Pureed - Diana Lesire Brandmeyer Marty C. Lintvedt, Authors

We’re Not Blended We’re Pureed – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds

A circle is a symbol of unity, eternity, and completeness. The wedding ring represents eternal love and the persistently renewed promises of a couple. Some Scandinavian women wear three bands: one each for engagement, wedding, and motherhood. In medieval England, a bridegroom would slide the ring partway up his bride’s thumb, index, and middle finger, saying “In… Continue

Review: 30.5 by Sudè Khanian

You may recognize Ms. Khanian from the "One" series. Her story is going to debut this month and it is worth considerably more than the 99 Cent cost.

Well, 30.5 is the reason I wanted her to be a part of the "One" series.

30.5 is a collection of 31 reflectional fiction stories influenced by the author’s vaguest view point of the universe and her autobiography.

It is much more than a collection. Each story is, in a… Continue

An Uncommon Family – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds – Desserts
“Mama?” she whispered.  She saw the woman only from behind, but the bounce in her step, the long, reddish-blond hair flowing down her back, swaying left and right, the tall, slender figure – it must be her mother.  She tossed the…
