Since my novel is set in Groves and Beaumont, Texas, I thought I would introduce you to my hometown. People from this area call it the "G-T," short for Golden Triangle. The reason why is pretty simple, the areas that are listed together as a community form the shape of a triangle if you were to look on a map (Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange). Some of the better known areas are: Beaumont and Port Arthur.…
If you are an independently published (self pub or small press pub) author you may be overwhelmed by the high cost of book promotion and by the sea of expensive options that may or may not see results.
The Independent Author Network is a community of self…
Introducing a site forlike minded authors who are self or published by a small indie press. This site is open to authors who are active social networkers at twitter and facebook etc. The group will share info, ideas, and experiences from their travels around self promotion/publishing. This group would be free to join. The only cost would be 20-30 minutes of each author’s time per week.…
Elitist attitudes toward self-publishing and POD or small press publishing is still rearing it's ugly head. Yes, there are a multitude of writers out there who should take up art or music instead, but they abound in traditional publishing, too. I'm sure many readers have opened a book published by one of the five major publishing houses and closed it after a few pages; badly written, boring, slow, poorly executed plot, editorial errors, ad infinitum, but nonetheless published. On the other…
When I was stuck in the corporate world many years ago, I dreamed of escape to the freedom of running my own small business. Eventually I plucked up the courage to leave and started my own small business, with the goal of training and inspiring people. In order to run my business, I taught myself how to do VAT, keep my books, do my accounts and keep stock of products. While I was free of the pressures of a boss and organisational structures and politics, but I still didn't feel very free and…

I have noticed a trend lately that is extremely disturbing to me: Lots of small business owners and authors don't have business cards. Before I go into my thoughts of why these things are vital to book sales, and just sales period, i'm curious to know how many of you have business cards and how many of you don't, why or why not?

I have a new thing that I do. I spend a half hour a day promoting my books. Once I have accomplished my goal of one half hour, I give myself permission not to do any more promoting that day. If I still want to I can, but I give myself permission to stop.
I do this because promoting can be such discouraging hard work with no end in sight. There is so much to do and yet so little to do. I feel like I am trying to bail out the ocean with a teaspoon. Especially since I have a small… Continue

Rejection. Oh, how it stings. Most of us have been through it - plenty. Seeking jobs, college admissions, love, or publication for our books. It hurts. Destroys our self-image. For a while, anyway. And it tears at the thin fabric in which we cocoon with our fragile writer's ego, protecting the inner belief that our work is valid.
A new writer recently emailed me after receiving a flurry of rejections from big agents. With a crushed… Continue

It's been a busy week as usual. Of Dragons was released by Red Rose last Thursday, and it's been full on ever since. I have to admit I've learned a fair bit about promotion this week, and networking with other authors and…
