Do not despair. Don't be afraid. People love to read books.

Don't be afraid. No matter what is happening in the news, it's really not all that bad. People will still want to read. They will still buy books to entertain and inform them.

I see some authors pulling back on promotion. That's a mistake. You don't need to spend money to promote your books. Learn how to build your online connections and you can sell tons of books without spending a lot of money.

Potentially stupid advice

A blogger recently posted the following blog entry about my book, 1001 Ways to Market Your Books:

But the main purpose of today's blog entry is to disagree with potentially dangerous advice. In the section on getting book reviews, John urges that writers "send books as early as possible -- preferably four months in advance of the book's publication date."

How to Keep People from Making Big Mistakes

I found this interest little tidbit in a book review of Billion Dollar Lessons by Paul B. Carroll and Chunka Mui. Sometimes if you want people to do what you want, you have to give them a big stake in the issue:

After World War I, more than 75 percent of U.S. Air Mail pilots died in crashes on the job. The mortality rate was eased only when the Postal Service required the managers who ordered pilots out in bad weather to go along for the ride.

Ten Million Eyeballs in Colorado cancelled

I am having to cancel the Ten Million Eyeballs Event in Boulder, Colorado, due to a problem with our landlord and the next door tenant for the townhouse that my wife and I reside in right now. Because both the landlord and the tenant are irrational people, I really have to stay here during this time to protect my wife from harm.
