Many of those we serve in our Christian Counseling practice ask about God and what He wants from us, what pleases Him. They have mostly been taught about doing good works of service to others but haven' t been told the most important thing God looks for in each and every one of us. It's attitude, why you do what you do and how you do it.

Jesus came not only to pay the penalty for our sins so that we can be with Him and the Father and Spirit forever, He came to show us how to live this physical life. He taught His disciples and those others who came to Him for answers to life's questions simple (but not necessarily easy) principles they could live every day. One of these is His law of love: loving God, others and self. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus taught that if we seek God's way of life and thinking, all that we need will be given to us. Keep reading the next paragraph for a beautiful example of lovng and trusting God.

Luke 21:1-4 tells the story of a widow ( in those times, a woman with no visible means of support) who donated a very small amount into the offering basket outside the temple. Jesus pointed out that she gave from what she really needed for herself. We can probably speculate correctly that she loved God so much that she wanted to show it in this way.

Jesus drew the disciples' attention to this woman because He wanted them to understand giving from His perspective, that it's not the amount (He pointed out that those who were wealthy gave huge sums but there was no personal sacrifice involved). She might have gone without food or other necessities that day or even for a longer period, but she wanted God to have her best. She put Him and His kingdom first. What a truly beautiful example!
