There seems to be growing interest in hyperlinking fiction. Most of the focus is on providing alternate endings or plot points, so that the reader can choose the shape of the book. That doesn't interest me. Frankly, I spend a lot of time figuring out where a book should go, and I'd prefer the reader follow along with my intention.
What does interest me, however, is hyperlinking, for example, historical fiction in the sense of providing what are essentially footnotes. It greatly enhances the reading experience if, when you come across a detail that interests you, you can follow a hyperlink onto the web and to much more information than would fit comfortably in the novel. As an experiment, I have posted the entire first chapter of my novel Consider The Elephant: The life and death of John Wilkes Booth as told by his brother Edwin on that book's website, considertheelephant.com Check it out and tell me what you think. And if anyone has figured out how to hyperlink ebooks on Mobipocket and/or Kindle, I'd like to know about it.
