Have you cleaned out your closet lately? In many homes a closet is used as a place of storage maybe for clothes, shoes, towels, or household appliances. Growing up my mother would often collect unwanted items that serve no purpose and store them in the closet. The problem was over a period of time my mother would continue storing unwanted items or clutter in the closet until the closet was unable to serve its natural purpose. Instead of being an organized place of storage the closet has now become a disaster waiting to happen. The closet is a place that we wince every time the thought of a guests or family member opens and discovers the clutter we have been hiding. The human heart can often be compared to a cluttered closet full of useless things that we have collected over time and refused to get rid of. For example we were in a relationship that didn’t work it out and we store those feelings in our heart, or we experience bad relationships with family members and friends and we store those things inside the heart. We adopt a habit of alcoholism, drug abuse, gambling, or violence and the scars from those habits fill our heart over a period of time our heart becomes filled with clutter. The same can be said about a lot of things we practice such as sexual immorality, lies, stealing, gossip, and betrayal. We have a tendency to hide all of our bitterness and secret faults in our hearts and we shun the idea of anybody being able to take a look in our heart. If we continue the behavior of hiding thins in our hearts disaster will strike because our heart will run out of room for clutter. The solution is we must begin a process of cleaning out our closet so our heart can serve its natural purpose. The Holy Bible refers to this cleansing process as sanctification or setting one’s self apart. We must begin evaluating our life and taking inventory on the past sins and the past wrongs that has affected us over time and begin to deal with each situation. Jesus Christ wants to live in our hearts and he is willing to cleanse each and every inch of our hearts if we trust him. The very word of God instructs us to not let our heart be troubled but trust in Jesus Christ (John 14:6). The word of God also says that we can lay our burdens upon Jesus Christ and he will carry those burdens for us and give rest unto our souls (Matthew 11:29-30). The human heart can collect a lot of pain and stress over time which can create many voids in our life and lead to addictive and chronic behavior that can destroy us. We have nothing to lose by praying to God and asking Jesus to heal our broken hearts. We have nothing to lose by asking Jesus to come live inside of our hearts and to govern our souls. We have nothing to lose by learning the Holy Bible and applying the Bible to our daily lives. In fact we have everything to gain because the Bible promised us that God would restore our souls and fill our voids by taking away our wants (Psalm 23). It is time for all of us to take inventory on our lives and to clean out our closet may the Holy Spirit comfort you all amen.
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.-2 Timothy 2:20-22
