All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.-Matthew 21:4-11
The word of God is so powerful that if we study the word of God we will be prepared for the future. God has given us what we need so that when certain events take place in our lives we are ready to react accordingly which gives us hope in all situations. Jesus was coming into Jerusalem across the Kidron valley riding upon a donkey and the people began proclaiming Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. The Jews of this day knew exactly what was going on because the message of God had preceded his coming. This was the day they had been waiting for and it had finally arrived. Daniel 9:24-25 “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.” In plain English God promised that there would be 490 years of judgment pronounced upon Isreal. The word weeks is years so 70 times 7 weeks or 490 years and the word says they will begin from the time the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem was given. Then the prophecy describes from the time the commanmdent was given unto the time Messiah shall be cut off will be 483 years or 69 seven year cycles. Now if you translate this prophecy into days it would be 173, 880 days because Daniel lived under Babylonian rule which means they used a Babylonian calendar of 360 day years as oppose to the Julian calendar we use now which is 365 day years. The commandment was given to Nehemiah in the book of Nehemiah 2. So the people of Jesus day had then been keeping track the would have understood that 173, 880 days before the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem the decree was given to rebuild the city thus fulfilling this prophecy to the period.
So you say that was a broad prophecy a little difficult to grasp so here is a simpler prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” Here is the prophecy that when Messiah came to Jerusalem he would be riding on a donkey and the people would rejoice and call him King and he would have salvation. Understand the people understood the word completely because they did exactly what the bible said they would do even when they cried out Hosanna we see another fulfillment of prophecy in Psalm 118:22-26 “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.” The people cried out Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord they knew their king but by the end of the week they would kill him. They had the word of God they had witnessed the fulfillment of prophecy yet they were unwilling to go the distance with Jesus. They were unwilling to go all the way down Golgotha Road on top of Mount Moriah where he would give his life for their salvation. Is that today are we willing to go deep into the word of God, willing to take what we know and pay the price for it or are we rejoicing while it’s safe and when the enemies approach do we compromise. The sad truth is the enemies where the ones who should have understood the scripture the most the leaders of the church. Luke 19:39-44 “And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” How sad that they neglected the word of God and led many to destruction. They didn’t know that this was the day of their visitation or the day Messiah would come to be cut off. 69 out of 70 weeks have been fulfilled against Israel and only 1 seven year period remains the tribulation period. God will finally open the eyes of the Jewish people to his Messiah at the end of his last seven years of judgment but us who have recognized Jesus as Messiah today can take that information and recognized that this is the day the Lord has made and go all the way for Christ today. Let us go deeper into the word of God and let us endure these hard times and walk into heaven with our Messiah. The question today is how far will you go?
