Recent Reads: What made me choose them and finish them?

I've been having a lot of discussions with indie authors about develpoing your market and your target audience. While I am still defining where I need to be concentrating my time from a marketing standpoint for The Time Of My Life, I reflected on books for which I became someone's audience and why.

So here are some recent reads for me: Getting Inby Karen Stabiner. Its a book about five families and the lengths they have to go to to get their kids accepted to the perfect college. It appealed to me because I have a son doing college apps right now. And while it was fiction, it really did explain the process!

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Seltzer. Yes its the one the new movie HUGO is based on. Since I write some YA I read it too. This one has a cute story but its the gorgeous illustrations that make the book, which appeals to the art teacher in me.

The Help. Well, what southern  woman writer wouldn't read it? Plus, it appeals to the teacher who won teaching tolerance awards from Facing History and Ourselves (me.)

A Perfect Day by Richard Paul Evans. I have read it before, but this for me is his best work. It really paints a good picture of what could happen if your book really does become the next big thing.

Mr. Pip by Lloyd Jones. I really didn't buy it just because Hugh Laurie is slated to star in the movie version. After a civil war and political coup, the school is left in ruins. The eccentric Mr. Watts puts on his suit, sweeps the school house and starts to teach the children by reciting Great Expecations to them. Literary and well written, current with world events. Its not a feel good book, but its a good book.

Now I wonder, how do I find the right people to read my book?
