The Slave Trade during the Antebellum Era

During the Antebellum Era, slavery expanded on such a scale that by the 1860s, there were nearly four million slaves in America. The growth of slavery in the US can be attributed to the invention of the cotton gin. With this new machine, cotton fibers can now be separated more efficiently and quickly from its seed. The efficiency of the cotton gin led to massive booms in production, which in turn led to the massive increase in the number of producers. These developments also led to the greater use of slaves.
