These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.-Proverbs 6:16-19
As human beings are heart should be one with our Father in heaven. We should love the things that he loves and hate what he hates. God hates sin, iniquity, transgression, wickedness, or evil. This scripture here in Proverbs gives us a list of some abominable sins before the Lord and the scary thing is that these sins are common practices. When you look at this list what do you feel inside of your heart? Do you feel conviction? Do you feel grief? Do you feel a strong desire to run and share this information with others? Or do you feel offended and that this list is impossible to keep?
First let us examine abomination numero uno a proud look. Be it known that pride is deadly. The scriptures testify in Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” James 4:6 says “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Proverbs 16:5 says “Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.” God wants us to be humble because when we are prideful we trust in ourselves. A prideful person believes that he or she can earn salvation. Prideful people believe that they will work their way up to God. Prideful people are only concerned with the Ten Commandments and have a tendency to put people down because of rules they have not followed. Usually these rules are traditional and taken out of context. A person that is humble doesn’t waste time working their way up to God they understand that God reached down to us. A humble person doesn’t trust in themselves but will submit unto the will of God. A humble person understands that salvation is not earned nor is it based on the amount of work we do. Salvation is a gift from God because he loved the world. A humble person follows the word of God without thinking about it they just love God and traditions are thrown out of the window. They understand the grace of God and that Jesus gave us commandments to love each other and him. We follow him because we love him. Whatever he is doing we are doing and therefore the Ten Commandments serve as a witness to our sin and Jesus is our deliverance from the sin. James 4:10 says “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
In conclusion pride is dangerous because it says to the world that you aren’t good enough. Prideful people will promote a belief system that says if you don’t eat a certain way then God will not accept you. Pride says if you don’t witness Christ a certain way then you will not be accepted into heaven. Pride says you will not be accepted into heaven because you were not chosen like we are. God has called us all but only the ones who answer the call will be chosen. He sent out a great invitation one day that offered us all the gift of eternal life and the invitation reads “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.(John 3:16)” God loves all of us and desires that we all be saved for he said so in his word 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Pride is what got the devil kicked out of heaven it’s what drove him to consider that he could be greater than God Almighty Isaiah 14:12-15 “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.” If you really want to be a servant of God then throw pride out the window and begin to examine your character. Do I exalt myself above others? Am I proud at how I carry myself as a believer to the point I don’t associate with others because they don’t serve God to the level I do? Do I feel as if nobody can tell or teach me anything? Do I think I am more special than anybody because of titles and labels? What motivates me God or my own will? Where is your heart do you care for the lost or do you just care about your own well being? Are you to good for people? Pride is very dangerous and I find myself praying for humbleness daily especially when the Lord begins to work through me. When people began giving applause do you tell them to give glory to God or do you listen for the sound? Pride do you hate it or embrace it, something to think about?
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.-Matthew 23:11-12
