To my Ning friends,

There is an excellent article entitled Gold Fever! in the January/February 2008 issue of The History Channel Magazine. This article details the lust for riches in the Klondike area of Alaska at the turn of the 20th century.

The article by Mike Coppock notes that the gold fortunes from the Klondike funded Mack Trucks, Gruman's Chinese Theater, Madison Square Gardens, the Brown Derby restaurant, real-estate holdings and even an ice-cream empire. Old west legends such as Wyatt Earp, Tex Richard, Frank Canton, Madam Mattie Silks and frontier scouts Jack Crawford and Luther "Yellowstone" Kelly were all drawn to the Klondike during this gold rush.

This gold rush also made fortunes in the towns of Portland and Seattle. These were supply points for the gold rush.

This area was very rich. Swiftwater Bill Gate's claim was literally knee deep in gold. In a two hour span, Jim Tweed took $4,284 from his claim. Frank Dinsmore found $24,489 in gold in one day. Albert Lancaster averaged $2,000 per day for eight weeks. Augusta Mack found enough gold to start Mack Trucks. Sid Grauman opened his chinese theater in Los Angeles with his Klondike fortune.

I find this a fascinating history article and it points out the mining and mineral heritage that has helped build America. My thanks to Mike Coppock for writing the article and The History Channel Magazine for publishing it.

I wrote my book The Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining because I wanted to perserve part of this country's mining heritage and educate the next generation. Minerals and mining have played a valuable role in America's rise as a world power.
