Taylor Media Services (www.freewebs.com/blacknewsjournal) reports that the three surviving children of Civil Rights Movement legend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have been accused of profiteering from the use of Dr. King’s name and image.

The charged was hurled last week when it was revealed that the children have charged the foundation building a national memorial in King’s honor more than $800,000 for the use of words and images of the slain civil rights leader.

The documents released revealed that the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation paid Intellectual Properties Management, Inc, - a firm run by Bernice, Dexter and Martin Luther King, III - $761,160 in 2007 and $71,700 to the family estate in 2003.

The memorial will be a 28-foot sculpture located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. (see Virtual Tour at www.mlkmemorial.org) Meanwhile, the Kings’ have not responded to the criticisms.

However, Cambridge University historian David Garrow is being widely quoted as saying, “I don’t think any other group of family ancestors has been paid a licensing fee for a memorial in Washington.” Garrow told the Associated Press, King would have been absolutely scandalized by the profiteering behavior of his children.”

So the topic for discussion this morning is…in these new age times of intellectual commodities, should the children of MLK be paid copyrights fee’s, or like the now infamous bootleg Obama paraphernalia found on every other corner in America, should the public be allowed to make money on MLK’s name…for free?

Martin Luther King did a great thing, but give to credit to the black before him who laid the foundation. Give credit also to the slaves, Fredrick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington who paved the way for the freedom of the black man, applaud the legislative system, the president who signed the civil rights bill, and above all give Glory to God. Without all of these individuals, we would probably still be trying to get a Civil Rights Bill signed. Martin Luther King would not have stood for all of this hype. He only only wanted it to be known that he tried to help somebody, he never asked to be made a demi-god.
Give credit where credit is due. And yes, I don't believe his family should be trying to get rich off of his name. If Martin Luther King were alive today. I am very sure that he would tell his kids to make a reputation and a name for themselves. You would think that it would be an honor for monument to be constructed in his honor, without somebody having their hands out because the nation desires to recognize him. This family is suppose to be a type of Christian family, I thought. Bernice is a preacher. Greed is not from the hand of God. and that's my two cents.
Hi Carolyn,

Your two cents are welcome...smile

I agree with your point about giving credit where credit is due. They just had a big ceremony regarding Sojourner Truth being memorialized in the US Capital rotunda....things are getting better

But the point of my post was about Intellectual Property Rights (IP). As a writer, I'm sure you agree that if somebody is going to make money off your name (and millions are being made on MLK)....then you should be paid as well.

One example, I pointed out was about all the bootleg Obama gear that is out there. Now I know, it's not proper for a public figure to be charging copyright fee's....but I'm sure Obama is pissed

I think the King children should be paid IP fee's...I just don't know if it should be $800,000
