My spirit was very troubled as I listened to the news and heard the story of a twelve year old girl that was shot in the back. The girl was shot at a party between the hour of 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. The shooting along was in and of itself enough to upset anyone. The thing that troubled my spirit the most was the fact that a twelve year old girl was out t a party at those hours of the morning. I would like to know what kind of parental or guardian control is being practiced that would allow any twelve year old to be out during those hours. My thought at the time was that the adults that are responsible for the safety of that child should be brought up on various charges. The least of which would be negligence and endangering the welfare of a minor. The next day I learned that the mother of the twelve year old who was shout told her daughter she could not go to the party and had slipped of the house to go to the party. I think that the statement that the mother made troubled my spirit also. The question I now had was what kind of parental or guardian control is being enforced that would allow a twelve year old to slip out the house unknown. Also there is the other question of what kind of environment that this child was raised in that would allow her to make the decision to leave home at such hours in the morning. I think more than ever that the adults responsible for the twelve year old girl should be charged with something. There actions or lack of actions are as bad as the person that did the shooting.

Yes, I can imagine single parenting is extremely hard. I guess because I had my daughter late (42) I am more conscious of parents who complain about aa their restrictions and 'what they are missing out' in life being a parent... Well, once a child enters the picture, life does change and a self-serving live no longer fits in the equation -- For me, I think I was too selfish to have had been a good parent while in my twenties ... I suppose God knew exactly what He was doing (smile) -- Keep writing, Darryl, I enjoy your blogs!

Hi judy your right being a parent is hard and a single parent even harder like myself. I am the father of two young men 18 and 17. Both of which ask for permission to go anywher even my 18 year old. Your story about the girl and her mother is hard to believe.
Happy parenting Judi

I couldn't agree with you more, Darryl. I am a mother of a seven-year-old and it amazes me how many children her age are 'raising themselves' literally. Two years ago, my daughter had a friend sleep over for one night and her mother did not pick up her child until one week later --throughout the week, I tried calling the mother to no avail and was ready to call the police -- that parent only met me once or twice and did not know me at all. How did that parent know that I would not harm her child? Being a parent is a hard job but it is our job; not the schools, government or any other system --
