I only write about the San Joaquin Valley of CA. People try to tell me that there's nothing much here to write about, but they're wrong. I worked in law enforcement and I believe some of the crimes occur because of the rural setting, the heat and the eerie Tule fog. The mix of people give me a large canvas to paint on: Dust Bowl migrants, Hispanics, Hmongs, Chinese, Japanese, Swedes, Germans, military, Armenians, Portuguese--you name it, we got it. I refer to the landscape as "cranky," and you have to look hard to see the beauty. But, it's there and I want to capture it in my mysteries.

My new series is set in a fictional coastal town--Terra Bella Beach. The Pismo-to-Cambria area. The Central Coast is a big part of our lives here in the Valley, and I thought my YA readers needed to know that California beach cities aren't all San Diego and Laguna.
