51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Carolyn, a writer and editor from Georgia. I have my own writing/editing service, called Lawrence Creative Services and I'm also a fitness coach with Beachbody. I've been writing since I was 6, won my first poetry contest at 8, wrote my first 'novel' at 13, and have been hooked ever since. There isn't a moment when I'm not thinking about, talking about and dreaming about a story/character/plot/scene.

I've just started a creative writing workshop in town, and the kids (ages 9-14) requested that I continue the workshops. I almost cried! They want to continue on.

Right now, I'm working on the second book in a triology called The Secrets of Undrencaul. I'm shopping The Fifth Window, book one, to agents, hopefully, someone will represent me and the series. I also write several health and fitness (my other love) articles for Associated Content, eHow and Taking Time for Mommy. My poetry has been published on Border Hopping too. So excited about it. I can't believe I'm finally a *published* writer.

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell! Happy to be here, happy to be a writer!

Karen - well done. Bronze is strong and enduring as I am sure your book must be. Best of luck with the book.

Hi Everyone, I wanted to take a moment to brag a little. My paranormal thriller, Midnight Revelations - vol. 1 in the Dark Whispers Series received the Bronze award for Horror in ForeWord Magazine's 2008 Book of the Year awards. Winners were announced last Friday afternoon at the BEA. Wish is was Gold, but for my first novel, Bronze feels pretty good too!!!

Barbara, I wish I could help you. Selling books is NOT easy no matter what some folk might say. And it does NOT mean that your book is unworthy! Rarely do books sell themselves. I should know, as I sometimes publish under my own Magpies Nest Publishing (bulk printing (not through LULU etc.) I sell my own published books through retailers or privately. My USA publisher sells books in different ways. Of course, Ebooks have to be sold over the Internet. I have sold very few printed books over the Internet myself, but some people seem to do well. I am useless as a salesperson. Even when asked by a local lady about buying my last novel, I told her she could get it to read at the local library!
Sounds like most of folk here are doing okay. A special congrats to Michael — gold medal award — great!

"Sacrabeus wasn't collecting children for the fun of it. No, he wanted something from them. He had everything he desired except one thing: more time.." THE SORCERER AND THE DREAMER has virtually no violence. It is very suspenseful, heartfelt, loving and hilarious.

Hi everyone!
Martha Cheves has done a review of my first book, FOOLS RUSH IN. She posted over on her blog, http://marthaskitchenkorner.blogspot.com She compliments the review with a Raisin Cookie Recipe! Raisins are part of the book and part of our lives here in the Valley, Fresno County being the Raisin Capitol of the World.
Martha's Kitchen Korner is unique in book reviews. I hope all you authors make her acquaintance and maybe she'll find a recipe to suit your offerings!
(I wonder what she'll come up with for WHERE ANGELS FEAR? Angel Food Cake? Better-Than-Sex-Cake?)
