51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

I'm offering 6 novels on Amazon and Kindle.  "Candles in the Window" is a coming of age story, featuring the sex/love lives of college students in the 1950s at the Univ. of Conn.  It is more psychology than romance.  The students, feeling the generation gap, form an artificial family centered on a beautiful and talented, but enigmatic, even troubled, girl nicknamed "Silky."  A priest with homosexual urges provides a counterpoint to the students' story.  This book was reviewed in the Baltimore Sun and the reviewer insisted that it had to be a memoir because the style was so realistic (it actually is fiction!).  The book was also once used in an English literature course as required reading.

Also: a trilogy (but each book can be read separately) about an Army family in WWII, the Korean War Era, and the Vietnam Era.  Some themes in volume one ("Paul, Betty, and Pearl"): adultery; war; investigations into what happened at Pearl Harbor; maturation.  Some themes in volume two ("Daddypaul and the Yo-yo War"): child molestation, post-partum depression, Pentagon politics, Korean War, McCarthy-era witch hunts.  Some themes from volume three ("Gran'paul's Family"): family problems, fears of homosexuality, espionage, Vietnam, the anti-war movement.  These books are based in part on my experiences as an Army officer and historian and on the experiences of my family and people I knew; yet in essence they are fiction.

Finally, for dessert: a two volume set (but each can be read separately), "Bad Vampires" and "Nazi Werewoofs."  These are spoofs of James Bond/vampire/werewolf stories, featuring Good Vampires and Bad, a Mad Scientist, a huge diamond named Gladstone, an attempt to create a new Nazi empire with the help of specially created werewolves, and moles in each camp.

P.S.: "Candles in the Window" is available on Nook and Smashwords as well as Amazon and Kindle, but with a different cover.

Check out my novel, The Usurper. People have said it's a Tom Clancy meets The Manchurian Candidate.

Gary Jackson is raised to hate. Hate the United States, and everything it has ever stood for. His mission is to destroy the country from within, allying himself with America's enemies, and one very powerful and malevolent billionaire, to accomplish the deed. Once elected to the highest position in the land, Gary puts his lifelong goals to work, and puts the USA onto the path of ultimate destruction. He stops at nothing to rid the USA of his political and spiritual enemies, until a small group decide they've had enough, and they want to stop him. Will they succeed or will the United States be relegated to the dustbin of history?

A Cast of Southern Fried Characters Animates Gar Fish & Long Gravy by Alexander Devereux

Outskirts Press announces the latest highly anticipated body, mind, spirit and new thought book from Chamblee, GA, author Alexander Devereux. July 15, 2010. Denver, CO, and Chamblee, GA - Outskirts Press, Inc. has published Gar Fish & Long Gravy: Memoirs of Southern Sensibility by Alexander Devereux. The author's most recent book to date is a 6 x 9 paperback in the body, mind, spirit and new thought category and is available worldwide on book retailer websites such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The webpage at www.outskirtspress.com/alexanderdevereux was launched simultaneously with the book's publication.

Growing up poor in the small town of Vicksburg, Miss., Alexander Devereux didn’t have much materially, but there was no lack of remarkable personalities around him -- each of whom left an indelible imprint on his life. Gar Fish & Long Gravy collects the stories, insight, tragedies, and uproarious wit of an unforgettable cast of characters.

There’s Grandmama Lia’, whose hard-won wisdom on life, love -- and mistresses -- is dispensed in her kitchen to her beloved grandson, sometimes over Johnny Walker Black. There’s Ms. Peaches, who raises chickens in her ramshackle hut, yet might be one of the richest people in town. There’s Big Daddy, an imposing hulk, but his massive frame hides a vulnerable past and humiliating secret. And there’s Ms. Annie Laurie, a fabulously wealthy white woman who never had children of her own, but her love rains down on young Alexander. And that’s just for starters.

Based on real-life experiences, Gar Fish & Long Gravy is about the mistakes we make, the loves we share, and the stories we tell each other that make us who we are. It is the touching story of a boy who ultimately breaks free of the poverty and abuse of his extended family, yet never forgets the important lessons he learned along the way.

As Grandmama said, “If sense were common, everybody would have it.”

94 pages in length, Gar Fish & Long Gravy: Memoirs of Southern Sensibility is being aggressively promoted to appropriate markets with a focus on the body, mind, spirit and new thought category. With U.S. wholesale distribution through Ingram and Baker & Taylor, and pervasive online availability through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and elsewhere, Gar Fish & Long Gravy meets consumer demand through both retail and library markets with a suggested retail price of $12.95.
Additionally, Gar Fish & Long Gravy can be ordered by retailers or wholesalers for the maximum trade discount price set by the author in quantities of ten or more from the Outskirts Press Direct bookstore at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore.
