From SMALL GIFTS: very short stories with a touch of faithThis is from the first INTERLUDE after "Night Meadow"-where I reproduced a letter to our daughters.

"We picked up a small rescue Maltese female this past Saturday from in front of the pet store in the East county community of ElCajon. I sent you some pictures of the little thing. She is so emaciated she's like a little bag of bones and so frail. In order to get her I had to fib my butt off to the county animal shelter lady. You see, the one who had the thing needed some vouchers to get some cats fixed and figured we, your mom and I, could make a run to get them in which case there would be no money exchanging hands. I had to tell the county lady the cats were ours that they were given up by a neighbor who lost his home to foreclosure-six of them. That's the rule. The vouchers are a once in a life time special good deal and only six are available. My name is all over them so I hope they don't check up on me because I could be toast for perjury."

I told the story of the little one by writing letters to our daughters, and thought it would be kind of nice to let folk who read my book know about her, too. The INTERLUDE segments are true-as in-Princess SweetPea does exist and did go through so very much. The veterinarian made it clear she was just about a week from death when we got her. My wife told him quietly (menacingly) to save her no matter what. The letters cover about the first year. There's a picture of her in my page on this WEB site. "AnnaBelle's Spirit" is the non-fiction follow-up to Carolyn's first published work, "The Journey, The Dreams, & AnnaBelle". These books follow the lives of three generations of the authors family, beginning in 1924 with her Grandparents, Edgil & Minnie "Griffith" Wicker. Prologue

“AnnaBelle’s Spirit” is a follow-up to my first published work, “The Journey, The Dreams, & AnnaBelle”. In hind site, this is the book that should have been written first. With this writing I have tried to give the story more depth without being repetitive. I did not include any of my poetry in this book, except one I had written to Mom during the plane ride home after her passing.
The story of AnnaBelle is a tribute to the life of my mother, and the spirit that constantly drove her life. Born in Kentucky, she carried the memories of the hills, and her youth spent there with pride and dignity. She was one of the most beautiful and fascinating women I have ever known. Life with her was anything but average or mundane. Because of AnnaBelle’s choices, my journey has been more of an adventure than some people will experience. Because of my own choices, that same journey has taken my heart in many directions. I live with the spirits of those that I have loved, and I live with their memories etched in my heart. But most importantly, I live with their faces forever in my dreams. As you can see, I believe in the power of spirits, not only the spirit that drives us through life, but the spirit we become after life. I know I am surrounded by the spirits of those I love. Some stronger than others, but they are all here.
AnnaBelle’s journey from Kentucky to Indiana was her first. There were many places, people, and events that would rule her life. Her memories are her own, and some will remain so. I thank God I took the time to listen, she shared so many thoughts and dreams with me. The dates, times, and facts included in this book are directly from Mom. Her life was full of surprises, from the marriage she had dreamed of, to the nightmare it became.
I love AnnaBelle for the adventures we shared, for the endless moving, for the many people we met along the way, and for never a dull moment. Most of all, I love her for being my Mother. She always told me that she had two things in life that no one could ever take away from her, those two things were her daughters. As the youngest, I have always known she is the one constant in my life, and that she will never be completely taken away from me. Though God took her presence, he has left the memory of her life, her love, and her wonderful spirit forever in my heart. She stays there, with the others; they control my thoughts and dreams. There, they will live forever.
