Something About Me and My Book:
Growing up in El Paso instilled in me a fascination with all things New Mexican. "The Land of Enchantment" contains White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, towering mountains, the ghost of Billy the Kid, Aliens in Roswell, and exotic Indian Pueblos. I attended the University of New Mexico, eventually became president of New Mexico State University, and decided to write murder mysteries set in New Mexico after I retired. You can learn more about my books at www.orenduff.org.

Mike, the woman who showed up at PSWA and who Billie gave a contract to on the spot is now on this site. Please stop by and meet the newest member of Oak Tree Press: Marja McGraw.

Winning the EPIC award for the mystery category was great. I think Marilyn Meredith's No Sanctuary should have won - it was also one of the 4 finalists - but I was happy to receive the award.

Congrats on the award!!!!! I saw Billie today for lunch and gave her a tour of New Orleans, sorry I didn't get a chance to see you and your wife. Hope to see you in Vegas.

What's the title of your next Pot Thief book? And, will it get us high?

Incredibly flattered with your comment about liking my books better than Evanovich. Many people actually mentioned the post to me. Of course, I didn't tell them I was twisting your arm as you were typing one-handed!

Good morning, MIchael. I'm ready for your interview, picture, bio, book cover and short synop or blurb. I like to get them in about a week ahead so I can set up the post. Please send the items to ssn.whitfield@gmail.com I look forward to learning more about you and your writing. Let' both get the word out that you're up the week of September 7th. Thanks so much!

Michael, everyone kept saying they wish they had a group like ours. That's one of the reasons why we started posting like this. June jots down the threads and then we do a round-robin via email and encapsulate the conversation. We had a real blow-out last week, I think that's going to be posted in Sept. Sarah, our youngest member, sulked a bit at our critique of her short story. My throwing the pages in the air did NOT make the blog. Yes, I can do the tough-love thing. Feathers are now smoothed. Writing goes on.

A new post went up yesterday. We're posting on Mondays. Talk this time is about a local murder trial and contest strategies.

Oops. You'd think as a writer, I would pay more attention to precision of expression. "The Land of Enchantment" is actually the state motto of New Mexico, which is why I put in it quotes. But now that I read it, it does sound like the title of a book I'm trying to promote. In fact, my book is "The Pot Thief Who Studied Pythagoras." And you are right, Ann, I love books written by natives of interesting locales because of the sense of place the impart.

Welcome, Michael! Glad to have you with us.

Land of Enchantment sounds like a marvelous book. There's nothing like a book written by a native of the area. We find out all sorts of "secrets" that way.
