Profile Information

Something About Me and My Book:
The Independent Publishing Magazine, launched in late 2007, is an online magazine providing essential information, resources and reviews of author solutions services and the future of publishing in a new digital age. In the beginning the exclusive focus was specifically self-publishing and POD (Print-on-demand) technology.

Over five years the magazine has established itself as the primary point for independent authors developing an author and publishing brand as well as some of the most insightful articles on the publishing industry.

Mick Rooney is researcher and editor at The Independent Publishing Magazine and owner of TIPM Media (Publishing Consultancy).

He was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1968. He has been writing fiction for nearly thirty years and has published nine books. His first book, Arcadia, was published in 1990. It is a poetic novella of the mind and was followed by The Eternal, Hybrid, Thais, and a book of collected shorter fiction in 1995, entitled, Oceanic.

Academy was Mick Rooney’s first full length novel. His second, Filigree & Shadow, was published in November 2008. His last novel, The Memory of Trees, was published by Book Republic, an imprint of Maverick House Publishing, in September, 2011.

He is a publishing consultant and has written many informative and illuminating articles in print magazines and online, including Writers' Forum, Publetariat, Self-Publishing Review and Publishing Basics about the changing and complex world of the publishing industry. In 2010, he published To Self-Publishing or Not to Self-Publish with Troubador Publishing.

He is currently editor and researcher at The Independent Publishing Magazine and writes for the only UK magazine dedicated to self-publishing - The Self-Publishing Magazine.

POD, Self Publishing & Independent Publishing Reviews Part 1 - 'Your Name's Not On The List'

I have noticed a particular rise over the past few months from readers of POD, Self Publishing & Independent Publishing asking me to review specific author service companies which they have not yet seen on the site. The array of author service companies is vast and I am slowly working my way through the ones I wish to include—meaning—there are already quite a number I have looked at but have decided not to review. There are many reasons why I… Continue

Author Solutions Article by Kevin ogorek - Analysis

In life, certain things have a way of happening just at the right time. This week’s book publishing news was no exception. I have two quotes below from two senior principles from very diverse areas of the book publishing world, who in their own right believe they are making a difference. Here are the quotes. Follow the theme.

Quote One:

"We regard ourselves as independent in the sense of independence of third-party corporate ownership and feel at home with the other… Continue

Blackwell booksellers will take ownership of the latest version of the Espresso Book Machine in April and showcase it at this year's London Book Fair on April 17th.

Blackwell, who sell academic books, will have the Espresso Book Machine in their Charing Cross store as part of a pilot test commencing on the last week in April. If successful, they plan to introduce machines to other Blackwell stores.

Blackwell's plan will focus on testing the machine as well as gauging the… Continue

Faber Liberates the Ebook

Independent book publisher Faber is one of one of those to watch for new trends and different approaches to publishing. On April 27th, they will release the ebook, ‘What Price Liberty?’ by Ben Wilson, inviting buyers to pay what they deem appropriate, even if that means the download is for free. The book itself deals with the historical attacks on civil liberties in Britain and how we need to carve a different kind of liberty for today’s modern… Continue

AuthorHouse Courts The Establishment With Referral Program

Over the past few months I’ve noticed that AuthorHouse have been making a particularly worrying use of their Referral Program. This type of program is used by a number of large Self Publishing companies using digital POD (print on demand) services to authors. Here is AuthorHouse’s own description of the Referral Program. The following are from AuthorHouse’s US and UK websites.…
