Bible Stories: Is the Noah Epic Original?

Is the story of Noah’s Flood simply a rewritten version of a story found in the Epic of Gilgamesh? Some people actually believe that the biblical story of Noah’s Flood was not historical at all, and was borrowed from flood legends in Mesopotamia, especially the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Dating from the Third Dynasty of Ur (circa 2100 BC), the Epic of Gilgamesh is often regarded as the first great work of literature. It is contained on 12 large tablets. Perhaps the most interesting story in…

Looking at ways to improve my sales

January 17th. 2015

I’m stepping up a gear this year. Last week I put my latest book, A Dangerous Game, on pre-order with Amazon, something I’ve never done before. The launch date is January 29th. Looking at the way some other writers approach this point, I know I haven’t put as much in to the launch as they have. One writer on one of the forums I follow has been incredibly busy and looks like he’s achieving pretty good results. Some of you may ask…

The Journey of a Shy, Frightened Child to a Grown Confident Woman

I have come a long way from the shy little girl I was back then to the confident woman I am today. However, getting over the trauma of an unsettled childhood was not easy. Surviving the hardships I faced before took a lot out of me as a child.

One thing that I learned early on during my childhood was that things change and will always change. You just can’t resist change. You have to accept it and move on the best that you can. You have to learn to adapt. I have survived upheaval and…

Bible Stories: The 10 Commandments - Egyptian Book of the Dead Retold

Did Moses borrow the 10 commandments from the Egyptian book of the dead?

It sure looks that way. Apparently, the 10 commandments are based on statements made in chapter 125 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The existence of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was known as early as the Middle Ages, however, it was translated much later in the 19th century by a number of Egyptologists and linguists.

New Book, New Year, New Hope.

January 4, 2015

A new year and most of us are filled with hopes and dreams for the future. I’m no different and among my hopes and dreams is the advent of another of my books. My latest, Past Imperfect, is due for release on January 30th. Even after all these years of writing and experiencing the ups and downs of a literary life; I still can’t help but get excited at the prospect. I feel like an anachronism in today’s digital market place though, and the literary…

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS AVAILABLE TO HELP ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WRITE BETTER ESSAYS AND STORIES

It’s easy for a teacher to become overwhelmed by grading, and when it comes to grading students’ writing pieces, the ask can become even more onerous. As most teachers know, specific timely feedback in student writing is a highly effective way to improve a student’s writing skills. However, with so many subjects to plan for and teach (at the elementary level), and so many students’ writing pieces to grade (at the middle school level), how can a teacher “do it all”?

Luckily, there are…

HOW TEACHERS AND PARENTS CAN PROMOTE ACTIVE READING

The Common Core Standards require that “by the end of the year, [the student will] read and comprehend literature [and informational text] with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range” (www.corestandards.org). Along with this standard are other related objectives that require active reading skills.

How, then, can we promote active reading among our students?…

IS THIS THE END OF STANDARDS BASED EDUCATION?

Recently, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced his resignation effective the end of the year. Immediately, President Obama named John King, Jr. as his replacement, leaving many to speculate on what his tenure could mean for education.

Many consider the end Secretary Duncan’s term to be more than a simple changing of the guard; they are speculating it may be the end of a standards-based education era. From 1993-2015, the tenures of

Secretaries Riley, Paige, Spellings,…
