Marketing can be fun...

Interesting how subtle and diverse marketing a book/screenplay can be - without being intentional. Let me explain.

My wife and I do the occasional flea market for extra cash - writers need to eat. We generally set up our stall with antiques and near antiques and of late we also lay down a tarp and display books. All…

Book Reviews...

When you go to a purchase site for books, are the reviews important to you?

Is the review what determines whether or not you will buy a book?

Does it seem like all the reviewers lately are just friends of the author who have left reviews?

All of these are important questions when asking yourself if it is important to promote your book via book reviews.  Amazon seems to be the place where most of the reviews are…

Top Five Sites For Mystery/Thriller Writers

One of the chief advantages of writing mysteries is that you can actually make a living at it. Usually, mysteries are published in series. Once you have established an engaging main character and a perfect setting (according to Bowker, Americans like their mysteries set in “the misty bogs of Scotland and London’s Trafalgar Square” – but New York or Rome will do in a…

Get the Most Mileage Out of Your Blog - Precycle!

If you are new to the blogging scene, you probably don’t have a lot of followers (yet). For aspiring authors, this is a calamity. Page Layout

The layout of your book is very important. The average paperback book size is six inches wide and nine inches tall, which is much smaller than the average size of a sheet of an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper. This means that if you are submitting a book for printing, you will need to select the proper page setup.

Your page layout can be designed with any word processing software if your book is for a small audience of friends or family. Any serious work, however, should be…

Top 5 Sites for Romance Writers

Romance novels are arguably the most economically successful of all fiction genres. According to Romance Writers of America, romance books bring in a whopping 1.3 billion dollars a year, more than mystery novels, science fiction and fantasy combined. It's no wonder that more than half of all new fiction is comprised of romance novels. (This statistic is borne out by Amazon's…

Opening Scene in Down to the Needle

Down to the Needle

“The perp torched himself,” a fireman said, shouting to be heard over the clamor.

Angry red and orange flames from the still burning back half of the warehouse licked at the night sky. Glowing yellow embers, blown by April’s night breezes off the nearby ocean, took flight. Fire trucks encircled the building. Firefighters scrambled over strewn equipment. Men wearing army fatigues darted about. Two ambulances waited for the…

Frances Farmer and a nice surprise...

If you haven't noticed, I have been taking an hiatus from writing.  But, that's not to say that my hiatus will be permanent.  Not by a long shot.  Instead, I have been immersed in reading autobiographies which always whet my appetite to write.

One of the books I had the pleasure of reading was about Frances Farmer.  I had always heard the stories and even saw a clip from the show, "This is Your Life" that featured her very dark life.  She was a hopeful, shining…

Life & Times

A good many indie writers like myself are struggling to sell their books and consequently build up a readership, which I believe is the key to establishing yourself as a writer. I received my public library statement last week, and it tells me that my books were loaned out about 4500 times. Some may say that this not a lot, but the previous year my loans figure was 6000. I know a large number of public libraries have closed in UK, which I think is so sad, but it’s an inevitable sign of the…
