This is my first attempt at a novella. For several years, I entered short story contests to sharpen my writing skills. I knew I couldn't be too bad when I placed in most of the contests. I've turned some of the short stories into books such as Christmas Traditions-An Amish Love Story and The Dark Wind Howls Over Mary, a western. Still I have a bunch of short stories to expand…

This morning, I wrote over the 50,000 words needed to be considered one of the winners in the National Novel Writing Month contest (nanowrimo). This is my fifth year for entering the contest, and it has taken me this long to be able to write that title without having to look it up to get the words in order.
Now begins the editing which takes longer…

I've just put my latest Amish book on the market. After writing six books in the series, the Lapp children are growing up. In Doubting Thomas, Emma Lapp, the oldest of the children is planning her wedding to Adam Keim.
I really like the cover of this book and plan on using this cover creator from Create Space again with other Amish pictures. I'm blessed with a friend I…

Strange how things work out. The first Saturday in August, my husband and I went to town wide yard sales with his sister in State Center, Iowa. One sale we didn't want to miss was the library's garage full of books. We had a good time going through all the books. I may have my winter's supply of material although I have read three already.
My sister-in-law…

I have a list of readers that want me to notify them when my latest book is published. When I emailed people that the book is on its way to their house, I ask them to write back to let me know how they liked the book. Well, some of the first reviews are back for The Courting Buggy and I want to share them with you.
Now the reviews are coming in from…

You look at this picture, and probably what you would think is it's just a picture. Maybe next you think who would want to take a picture of an old buggy anyway?…

I can breathe a sigh of relief now. After my month long writing marathon, I made it over the finish line with over 52,000 words. This is my fourth year and I do enjoy the challenge. Not only that the reward is I have a rough draft for my next Nurse Hal book and am working hard on it now. Look for the book in the market soon. I'm struggling with the…

In the Ozarks near Schell City, Missouri reading books was an activity on evenings in the fall and winter when night came early. I remember the bare bulb suspended at the end of wires that disappeared into the ceiling and the string beside it that was used to turn it on and off. The heating stove divided the dining room and living room and broke the silence with its crackling and hissing as the wood Dad…

Whose idea was this orchard we started? It was 22 years ago. I say it was my husband, Harold, who thought of fruit trees. He says it was me. He remembers when his brother, Aubrey, gave me the plum tree sprout at the edge of his yard. It came from his neighbor, Mrs. Kosta's old tree so that tree bears her name. The pear trees came from a pasture we rented close to Hannan Lake. I started them from seed in a flower bed so…

The sight might have looked like a natural phenomenon at first, but it wasn't. I just wished I'd have my camera with me. What happened was my mother-in-law uses every inch of her garden to plant something edible in. So one corner on the end next to the peach tree was where she planted a hill of…

The fall migration has begun. Geese and ducks fly low over us, heading south, and it reminds me of one wild duck that stopped at our house and stayed for awhile.
At one time, I had a large flock of white Muscovy ducks. The hens liked to hide their nests out like the chickens. As soon as the ducklings showed up with the mothers, I'd take the babies away. Some of the hen ducks had three…

I'm switching from the Amish Series to my children's book since this chapter of My Children Are More Precious Than Gold goes along with apple picking season. When I wrote this book I thought it might be informative for children to know what life was like in 1903 in the Blue Ridge Mountains…

July 27th would normally be a scorching hot day in Iowa. We expect that, after years of experience. Hot temperatures go hand in hand with a summer town celebration or a county fair. Not this time. Thanks to a cold front, Canadian air fanned Iowa today. Low dark clouds hid the sun, keeping the temperature in the sixties.
My husband and I went to Dysart, Iowa, about thirty miles from us, for their Iron Days celebration. As a writer, I’m always looking for details, humorous or otherwise,…

This is the first book in seven from my fun historical mystery series titled Amazing Gracie Mysteries. To get to know the mischievous Gracie Evans from Locked Rock, Iowa and the rest of her friends in the Moser Mansion retirement home it’s best to read the books in order. Now having brought up reading I must admit there are many outside activities in the summer to…

Mickey put his heart and soul into his book about his three tours in the Vietnam War. He describes everything he saw and felt about the country in vivid detail. That includes the horrors of war as well as the men's feverish efforts to block…
