Question from Member: How does a fledgling author set up a book signing? I have heard that some new authors bring their own books to Barnes & Noble on a consignment basis.
John's Answer: To set up a book signing, just call the event coordinator at the bookstore. That's the person to ask for. Tell her how many people you can bring into the store for the event. Tell her what you will do with publicity to help get people into their…

Note: BookMarket.com was attacked earlier today by malware and Google has banned access to the site. Be patient. I'm working on fixing it.
I now have to wait for Google, Firefox, et. al. to acknowledge that there is no longer a problem with my website. That takes time. Alas.
===
Yeah, http://bookmarket.com is up and running again. No malware. Wow, that took about 12 hours to fix. But now all good to go.

I made the following comment in one of the forums, and then I realized that this is too important to hide in one forum.
Never, ever, buy a publicity or marketing package from a print-on-demand publisher. They know nothing about marketing or publicity. Their packages are generally way too expensive for the results they produce.
Avoid their advertising packages. Avoid their Internet marketing packages. Avoid their publicity packages.
I'd be happy to change my advice if any…

Here is an author success story from Judy Belmont, co-author of The Swiss Cheese Theory of Life:
So much of a book's publicity is the preparation and the building of a brand. To prepare for an upcoming release of The Swiss Cheese Theory of Life: How to Get Through Life's Holes Without Getting Stuck in Them! my co-author and I developed a website with wellness videos and information to offer self-help resources even before the book is out.
To start…

The following is an email I received from Ning today. It's about the worst customer service letter I've ever read.
First, they say that they are changing the price.
Second, they don't tell you if they are lowering or raising the price (but probably raising the price).
Third, they don't say how much.
Fourth, they say: Don't…

For me, the trickiest thing about being a writer is being a writer. I am a cellist – or was – until a rare neurological disorder ended my career. The shadow my illness cast was long, and my confidence in trying something new was short.
Fast forward.
Two years…

When I chose the date for my book release party, the first thing I did was ally with a charity that had something to do with kids. Even though I was not a major entity, it’s amazing how relatively easy it is to get a respected and viable organization (in my case, it was an adolescent obesity program at a prominent children’s hospital) to work with you when you are promising them some money and exposure.…

Here's another author success story, with Marilyn Wedge talking about getting her article accepted for The Huffington Post:
One thing that worked for me was to buy John Kremer's "15,000 Eyeballs Program" and follow the directions. Here’s why. I never would have thought of becoming a blogger for The Huffington Post.
I admire the…

Stephen Gallup, author of What About the Boy?, describes his initial foray into building an online presence:
I am attempting to initiate online conversations on topics related to my memoir, What About the Boy? A Father’s Pledge to His Disabled Son. To do this, I have begun writing short blog entries and posting them to my website, www.fatherspledge.com. Upon posting them, I then announce their existence on my Facebook page and…
