Have you ever cried out those words? A friend suffers with kidney stones and has mumbled how sick and tired he is of the pain. It persists and returns more often than he’d like.

And when the pain is unbearable, he heads to the emergency room. After filling out a myriad of papers, answering the endless, repetitive questions about his health history and insurance coverage comes the question: On a scale of 0 to 10, what number is your pain?

Aren’t you glad God never asks that question? He never, never qualifies what level of suffering we’re going through, how deep the hurt, how gnawing our pain, or even how long our heart has been broken.

He never asks because He already knows. He saw it happen. He sees its effect. He’s aware of the injury and…and He’s ready to administer the healing salve to soothe our searing wounds.

But we’re the ones who are so jittery. Like a caged lion, we move from here to there trying to find our own answer, with hands wringing, we want the answer in ways we can see, feel, and hear. And all the while, God is waiting, watching, and probably wondering if we’re ever going to be still. If we’re ever going to stop and inhale His goodness, His calling that often our sobs drown out.

Maybe He allows us to get to that point where we are indeed tired of the pain. The point where we can’t take it anymore …all so we could know that, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all” (Psalm: 34:18-19).

Is your trouble included in that “all?” I know mine is; yours has to be too. He delivers us from it, drives us out from its snares, and distances us from the despair that lurks about.
