What did you say? Is my hearing going, along with my eyesight?

The over-the-phone interpreting task carries its hazards. Often, a call from a medical facility might have a child screaming in the background after a vaccination. And the words that need to be interpreted get lost in the shrills and wailing that pierce your eardrums.

But results are still expected. As professional interpreters, we need, without a hint of hesitation, to capture each utterance and in an instant rummage through our brain for the other language equivalent and spill the interpretation. This needs to be accomplished with ease, clarity, and efficiency. And did I mention in a timely manner?

I absolutely love my job. Perhaps it’s the challenge…or the ability to help two people communicate.

The secret is not in the terminology you stored in your memory. Or in the eloquence of your speech or in the listening skills you must master. Or even in the command of both languages.

The true secret is in putting it all, I mean "all," into practice each moment of every call -no matter the distractions, obstacles, or barriers.

Knowing the elements of interpretation but not putting them into practice can spell disaster, defeat, and distress for all.

Life is like that. Fail to put a very important factor into practice, and our days will also see destruction.

Here’s what Jesus said: "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, whom dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete" (Luke 6:46-49).

How about you? Are you facing a storm? What elements did you put into practice to face the obstacles, storms, and challenges?

Praying your interpretation and application of God’s Word builds a home never to be shaken by storms in life.
