not to sound too myspacey, but thanks for the invite, Bill. I read you have a hot blog. You might consider getting that looked at. Kidding, kidding. Glad to be on board.
Hey, Bill,
You must be a busy guy keeping up that *hot* blog on the book industry! And you sent me an invite less than 24 hours after I signed up, so thanks for that. Stay sharp, I'll TTYL (talk to you later). (And visit your blog again soon!)
Hi Bill...thank you for stopping by my place. I just discovered book marketing today. I don't have a picture to put up. Good thing that is. I am quite homely. I will try to put up an avatar instead...now that's a babe. Take care...Penni

Bill, I'm glad to hear the figure 36 months for a book to find a following. Everything I heard pointed to a book being old news after the first year of release.
It's just that all the work I did with getting on podcasts, print interviews, and reviews and catalogs/trade shows through PMA just weren't reflected at all in sales.
It began to seem to me that it was like the gold rush. The people who made money in the Gold Rush were those who supplied the miners. Very few miners struck it rich.
In the new paradigm of publishing when it is very easy to get your book out, but hard for it to gain notice it is the author support folks who are making the money.
My paradigm is Relaional Promotion. And that's where I've had my best success in marketing "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary." When I give talks...when I email with readers and then they become champions of the book and me. The old-fashioned word of mouth seems to work best for this book.
Thanks for the encouragement. Anyway, I've learned a heap.
bill san, hajimemashite. thanks for the invite and please excuse my typing in all lowercase letters. some find it offensive and i hope youre not one of them. having said that, thanks for being my first friend on this network. i joined only yesterday, but it was indeed a very lonely 24 hours. from the comments ive read about you, you seem to be a wise man. looking forward to learning from you.
I bought Dan Poynter's report on How to get Book Reviews (all his material is very good of course, and cost effective), but it felt overwhelming. There was one hard print publication in the SF Bay area (I lived in Northern California at the time) I thought I had a shot at (this was back in 2006 when "Sightlines" came out as an iUniverse release). I corresponded by email with the "Poetry Flash" editor and she said to send the book. But, it never got reviewed. I even knew one of the regular reviewers. He said his hands were tied until she assigned the book to him. I'd sent a copy of the book to the reviewer as well.
So, the "Poetry Flash" review never happened (what became of the book I sent I quiver to think; I hope it found a good home and wasn't just tossed), but later the reviewer interviewed me for an article on book martketing for a North Coast hard copy publication that will come out this fall.
I signed up with a marketing group to send out review copies. Some things came of it, but much less than I'd hoped for the money I spent.
I threw myself into internet marketing and promoting my book for a year. Then I began to feel a lack of satisfaction and nurourance and sustanance from it. I decided that whatever I'd achieved was it and it was time to stop and go back to focusing on writing and working on my blog (www.riehlife.com).
My biggest challenge for promoting "Sightlines: a Poet's Diary" was getting it reviewed. I'm happy to say I was able to get several Internet reviews, but never the hard print reviews.
Hello, Bill ~ I accepted your friend request, and it seems i just duplicated that when I clicked when I should have clucked. Hope I don't show up twice. I've done that already.
I'm on Listmania too, but don't really know what to do with it either. I'm an Amazon Associate, my book is available as an e-book through Mobi-Pocket. We try everything. I hope you'll visit my zine and consider contributing an article, essay or story.
